Rare Bird Alert for Tuesday, September 6, sponsored in part by the Wild

The VNHS would like to express its sincere thanks to John Kalman for
serving as one of the Rare Bird Alert operators for 10 years, and for
chairing the RBA committee for the last few years. John has put an
enormous amount of time and effort into this project, and his efforts
are greatly appreciated by all of us.
RARE BIRD ALERT for CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW,
and BAR-TAILED GODWIT.
Sightings for Tuesday, September 6
The CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW was still present at the Iona Island
sewage ponds in Richmond, along the south side of the southeast pond.
At White Rock, the two WILLETS, first reported on August 28, were still
present on the beach near the White Rock pier.
Sightings for Monday, September 5
A VESPER SPARROW and a CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW were both seen at
the Iona Island sewage ponds in Richmond, on the fence along the south side
of the ponds. At the tip of the Iona south jetty, a WHIMBREL and a SURFBIRD
were seen. The LAPLAND LONGSPUR was still present along the jetty,
and 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS and at least 200 COMMON TERNS were
seen off the jetty.
Along the Boundary Bay dyke in Delta, a RUDDY TURNSTONE and 6
RED KNOTS were seen between the foot of 112th Street and the foot of 104th.
Sightings for Sunday, September 4
The first LAPLAND LONGSPUR of the fall was seen on the Iona Island
west jetty in Richmond, and at least 200 COMMON TERNS were offshore.
At Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, many migrant landbirds were seen,
including 10 WESTERN TANAGERS, a late RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, a
HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER and 2 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS, plus
3 species of vireos and 5 species of warblers.
Four GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at the foot of 112th
Street in Delta.
Sightings for Saturday, September 3
At and near the foot of 96th Street on Boundary Bay in Delta, birds seen
included 2 BAR-TAILED GODWITS and a MARBLED GODWIT, an
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, a WILLET, and a PARASITIC JAEGER.
At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts, Washington, a HEERMANN'S
GULL, 75 COMMON MURRES, 6 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, and a
WHIMBREL were seen.
At the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta, a WHIMBREL and a MARBLED GODWIT
were at the "compensation lagoon" on the north side, and a WILLET was in its
usual location along the south side near the base.
At the pond on the west side of Highway 17 in Delta, just north of Deltaport
Way,were a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, a STILT SANDPIPER, 3
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 30 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE.
On 94A Avenue in North Delta were a COMMON NIGHTHAWK and 3 BLACK SWIFTS.
At Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver were an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD and 2
RED-EYED VIREOS.
Two WHIMBRELS were at the end of the Iona south jetty in Richmond.
Sightings for Friday, September 2
Two BAR-TAILED GODWITS and a MARBLED GODWIT were at the foot of
112th Street on Boundary Bay, Delta. Also here were an AMERICAN GOLDEN-
PLOVER, 6 RED KNOTS, and several BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.

Wednesday, August 31
A CHIPPING SPARROW was at Blackie Spit, Surrey, on the west side
of Farm Slough.
