In San Juan County;
WW on August 15 had a VIRGINIA RAIL at the B-Square Ranch in Farmington.
In Taos County:
EH on August 25 had a PURPLE MARTIN near Questa. He saw a TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER at the Elephant Rock Campground on NM 38 west of Red River on August 26.
At the Big Arsenic Campground on NM 378 at the Rio Grande Gorge west of Questa
he saw a WHITE-WINGED DOVE.
In Colfax County:
DC on the Maxwelll Refuge found the finding of owls at the roost on the east
side of highway A-5 is spotty with a LONG-EARED OWL on August 24, and a BARN
OWL on August 27.
EH on August 25 saw a GOSHAWK along NM 38 between Red River and Eagle Nest.
On Eagle Nest Lake on August 25 he found the WESTERN and CLARK'S GREBES and
HERRING GULL that were reported earlier.
LD saw an immature GOSHAWK at Angel Fire on August 19.
There is now a gas station in Maxwell.
In McKinley County:
JT on August 15 had an immature female LUCY’S WARBLER at the Ramah Lake
Fishing Access area. Because of rocks one must walk in. He also had three
OSPREYS there.
In Cibola County:
JT on August 12 had a RED-FACED WARBLER in the Zuni Mountains in upper
Diener Canyon in sight of Mt. Sedgwick. On Bluewater Lake on August 16 there was
an OSPREY. In Bluewater Village he had five WHITE-WINGED DOVES with a
CURVE-BILLED THRASHER nearby. He had on August 12 a male INDIGO BUNTING at the
mouth of Bluewater Canyon with seven NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES on August 19.
In Bernalillo County:
CB on August 18 had a CAROLINA WREN in the eastern Sandia Mts. east of
Albuquerque at the Sulphur Springs Picnic Area at the first parking lot by the
entrance. He saw it on August 20 at the stream by the Crest Hwy. DP found it
on August 21 and JP said it was singing on August 22. CB saw it again on
August 25.
DP had an INCA DOVE on August 28 at the Los Poblanos Open Space of Montano
in Albuquerque on the north side at the ditch.
JJ on August 20 at the Bosque Trail at the Rio Grande Nature Center in
Albuquerque found a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH near a bench by the ditch. LN on August
26 reported an EASTERN KINGBIRD near the parking lot pond. JP saw it on
August 27.
In Torrance County:
WW on August 22 at the sewage ponds at Mountainair saw an EARED GREBE
present with a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
In Guadalupe County:
WW on August 23 at Power Dam Park in Santa Rosa had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER,
a GREEN HERON, and an EASTERN PHOEBE. JP on August 26 found the phoebe, a
MISSISSIPPI KITE, and three CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS.
Near Puerto de Luna south of Santa Rosa at a marsh to the right a mile from
town he heard a SORA.
In DeBaca County:
JP and others on August 26 found the LONG-TAILED JAEGER had died. An
immature COMMON TERN was present.
In Roosevelt County:
GK on August 28 had a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE fly over the ENMU campus in
Portales with four MISSISSIPPI KITES.
At the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose on August 26 JP recorded a
LEAST FLYCATCHER, eastern BELL'S VIREO, two female ORCHARD ORIOLES, and a
female-plumaged PAINTED BUNTING. On August 28 BW and JNM found two GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHERS, the orioles, a SUMMER TANAGER, and a CASSIN'S VIREO. WW on
August 31 saw a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, an eastern YELLOW WARBLER,
and the Least Flycatcher.
BW and JNM on August 28 at Elida saw a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, a LEAST
FLYCATCHER, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and two CASSIN'S VIREOS.
GK on August 29 at ponds southeast of Portales on Co. 8 had 30 LARK
BUNTINGS, 40 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS, and over 60 BLACK TERNS. At Oasis State Park
there was a mixed flock of over 400 SWALLOWS.
BW reported that because of the bad content of the water at the Portales
Sewage ponds few birds have stopped there lately.
In Curry Co unty:
BW and JNM at the Clovis Sewage Ponds had an immature TRICOLORED HERON,
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, two STILT SANDPIPERS, and breeding EARED GREBES.
In Chaves County:
GW. BW, and JNM on August 28 had a female WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER at the
headquarters of the Bitter Lake Refuge at Roswell. But very few shorebirds.
In Socorro County:
CL on August 28 at Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro found a
GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER. On August 30 JO, GP, and MB again found the
flycatcher and a CANADA WARBLER in an Aricona cypress by the pond. The warbler ass
not seen by WK, JS, or PMc on August 31, though WK did see the flycatcher.
KP on August 17 at Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio had a PEREGRINE
FALCON on the Marsh Loop and four WOOD DUCKS on the pond at the Norton Blind
at the Farm Loop. On August 24 she had 3 WHITE PELICANS on the Marsh Loop
with more pelicans at the Norton Blind. CL on the refuge on 28 had a good
number of LAZULI BUNTINGS with a singing INDIGO BUNTING, over 20 BLACK TERNS.
More than 100 CATTLE EGRETS were on NM 1 north of the refuge.
In Sierra County:
CL on August 26 had a CASSIN'S VIREO at Percha Dam State Park.
CL and CBr on August 23 had an OSPREY at Paseo del Rio Park below the
Elephant Butte Dam. CL saw it again on August 26.
At Caballo Lake on August 15 JN reported a PEREGRINE FALCON and four PAINTED
BUNTINGS (3 juveniles).
JO on August 11 found the shorebird flats at South Montecello Point were
under water at Elephant Butte Lake. JP and WW found two adult CALIFORNIA GULLS
at Three Sisters Point and at South Monticello two FRANKLIN’S GULLS. There
was a BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHER at South Highlands Point.
In Catron County:
JPi on August 10 at the Gila Cliff Dwellings saw a male AMERICAN REDSTART.
PY at the dwellings on August 27 reported CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, PYGMY OWL,
and a ZONE-TAILED HAWK.
MSt on August 19 found many CASSIN'S SPARROWS singing along Whitewater Mesa
between Glenwood and Mogollon with two MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS at feeders in
Mogollon and a HERMIT WARBLER on August 21 at mile post 5 on the road to
Mogollon.
EW on August 11 found all of the road east of Mogollon was closed.
In Grant County:
On August 27 PSt found four possible NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS on Roberts Lake.
DG on August 24 and 25 found the road up Burro Peak was bad from the storms,
but saw several HERMIT WARBLERS, the YELLOW-EYED JUNCO on north side), OLIVE
WARBLER, HUTTON'S VIREO, and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
On August 22 EW on US 180 3.3 miles south of Mangas Springs saw a
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER on a fence. She had an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER at Mangas
Springs.
DBe on August 20 had an INCA DOVE at the Sisters Restaurant in San Lorenzo.
BN still had the CATBIRD lingering at his Silver City home.
RS on August 18 saw five PURPLE MARTINS at Bill Evans Lake and three SPOTTED
SANDPIPERS at the Gila Bird Farm near Cliff.
In Hidalgo County:
JO at Clanton Canyon On August 12 had the calling WHISKERED SCREECH-OWLS and
up to three WHIP-POOR-WILLS. On August 13 he saw The female LUCIFER’S
HUMMINGBIRD again on the west side of the pass. CL and CBr had the Lucifer again
on August 19. JO on August 18 saw a female ANNA'S Hummingbird in the lower
part of Clanton. JO on August 26 in the main campground had three HERMIT
WARBLERS, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and a BROWN CREEPER.
CL reported a male LUCIFER’S HUMMINGBIRD on August 5 in Clanton Canyon .15
mile below Geronima Pass at the top. (The wast side is actually Cottonwood
Canyon). And on August 6 he saw a female Lucifer’s at the same site.
The BLACK-CAPPED GNATCATCHER nest in the New Mexico part of Guadalupe Canyon
fledged young. The canyon can be ‘fun’ in floods, so be careful. JO on
August 25 and 26 in the Arizona part of the canyon had a THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD
and up to three GRAY HAWKS. In the New Mexico part there was a ZONE-TAILED
HAWK AND up to eight VARIED BUNTINGS.
At Dunagan’s Crossing on Co. 1 south of Animas JO on August 14 had an
immature GRAY HAWK at mile marker 15, and a BOTTERI’S SPARROW sat the usual spot at
mile marker 14.
JP, JO, and WW found the WHITE-TAILED KITE a mils south of Rodeo along US
80. JO on August 14 found a BARN OWL and up to 20 Lazuli BUNTINGS in the row
of trees. CL and CBr on August 19 at Rodeo saw a BELL'S VIREO and a VERMILION
FLYCATCHER
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because of
events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
JO had a BARN OWL at the Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus on August 24.
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.
In Dona Ana County:
On August 26 JN saw a male GRACE'S WARBLER at his home just west of Mesilla.
CAVE SWALLOWS flew over on August 27 and he saw two OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs on August 27 saw a DICKCISSEL
while a ZONE-TAILED HAWK appeared. The hawk was eeen again and photographed
August 30.
JN at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park on August 19 found a LEAST BITTERN and
an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.
He found water in Isaak Lake northeast of Las Cruces on August 22 with about
1000 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, ten BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, five BLACK TERNS, and two
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS.
In Otero County:
CBr on August 26 in the Sacramento Mountains on Forest Road 64 south of
Sunspot at the Chiquita Creek/ Scott Able area had a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. On
Scott Able Rd. they found a PYGMY OWL on August 27.
CL and CBr found good shorebird habitat at the Holloman Lakes. On August 27
CBr had an EASTERN KINGBIRD present. CL on August 28 found many WILSON'S
PHALAROPES and two SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS. There was a good passerine migration
with eight CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, a CASSIN'S VIREO, a DICKCISSEL, two WILLOW
FLYCATCHERS, two BLACK TERNS, and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs near Whites City on RD on August 24-25 had an adult
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK. It was not found by MB on August 27. JNM and BW on
August 27 discovered a calling COMMON GROUND-DOVE, CATBIRD, ZONE-TAILED HAWK, and
a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.
RD on August 2 had an immature REDDISH EGRET at the northwest corner of
Brantley Lake. JP again saw the egret on the northeast part of the lake on
August 19 and 20. BW and JNM on August on co. 34 east of the lake saw six UPLAND
SANDPIPERS, four HARRIS'S HAWKS, and many SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS.

plans. On September 7 hike Otero Canyon with Rebecca Gracey; on September 14
to Bosque del Apache Refuge with Sei Tokuda; September 21 to the Manzanita
Mts. and Quarai Ruins with the Boettchers; and on September 28 to the Corrales
Bosque with Beverly Silfer.
Southwestern Audubon will bird to Fort Bayard east of Silver City on
Saturday, September 16, in a riparian area with a small waterfall. Contact is David
