EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, September 1.
Seabirds seen last Saturday on a boat trip from Hyannis to Hydrographer
Canyon on the Continental Shelf edge roughly 80 miles south of Nantucket
included 11 CORY'S SHEARWATERS (including one possibly of the
Mediterranean race), 55 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 2 SOOTY SHEAR-
WATERS, 5 MANX SHEARWATERS, 6 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS,
roughly 500 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 3 WHITE-FACED STORM-PETRELS,
18 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 550 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 20
RED PHALAROPES, 1 POMARINE JAEGER, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS,
and 6 LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, and reports from Stellwagen Bank this
week have included 3 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 100 GREATER SHEAR-
WATERS, 30 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 13 MANX SHEARWATERS,
1 NORTHERN FULMAR, roughly 3000 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS,
2 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 8 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 6 RED
PHALAROPES, 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 2 POMARINE JAEGERS, 2
LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, and 1 or 2 SABINE'S GULLS.
At Plum Island this week there were 8 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 1 GREATER
SCAUP, 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 50 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS,
roughly1000 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 5 WESTERN SAND-
PIPERS, 5 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS, and
3 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and reports from North Monomoy Island
and nearby South Beach in Chatham included 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1
PEREGRINE FALCON, 23 WHIMBREL, 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 20
HUDSONIAN GODWITS, roughly 100 WILLETS (including 9 of the
western race), a CURLEW SANDPIPER at South Beach, 1 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, 1 ARCTIC TERN, 4 FORSTER'S TERNS,
and 52 BLACK TERNS.
Seen this week at Nantucket were 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 1 LITTLE
GULL, 193 ROSEATE TERNS, 68 BLACK TERNS, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO,
3 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, and 1 CERULEAN WARBLER, and
miscellaneous reports this week have included a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER
in Medford, 5 CATTLE EGRETS in Manchester, a LITTLE GULL in Gloucester,
a PARASITIC JAEGER and a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE at Andrew's
Point in Rockport, and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER in Scituate.
COMMON NIGHTHAWK migration peaked this week with selected counts of
roughly 1000 over Groton, 735 in Westminster, 469 in Leicester, and 108 in
Jamaica Plain.
The WESTERN REEF HERON continues at the mouth of the Piscataqua River,
which forms the border between Maine and New Hampshire. For further
