This is the Michigan Statewide Bird Report for Thursday, September 8th,
2005. It is sponsored by the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo.
In HOUGHTON COUNTY, at the Sturgeon River Sloughs Wildlife Area, September
1st & 2nd, an immature female SMITH’S LONGSPUR* was observed on a dirt road,
near the pump station. The road is actually on the HOUGHTON-BARAGA COUNTY
line. On at least 1 occasion on September 2nd, the bird flew across the
line, into BARAGA COUNTY.
In KENT COUNTY, a WESTERN KINGBIRD was observed September 7th, briefly
observed southwest of the intersection of Leonard Street and East Beltline
Ave on Cornerstone University's campus. To my knowledge, it has not been
relocated.
In BERRIEN COUNTY, a juvenile PARASITIC JAEGER was observed on Monday,
September 5th, offshore of New Buffalo Public Beach. September 4th, 1
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was reported from Magic Carpet Turf Farms.
In MUSKEGON COUNTY, highlights from the Muskegon Wastewater System on
September 4th included AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER,
BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, RED KNOT, 2 EARED GREBES, and 1 exceedingly early
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER.
In WAYNE COUNTY, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was reported from Waltz Sod Farm on
September 1st. A LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was reported the same day at
Crosswinds Marsh.
In BAY COUNTY, at the Karn Power Plant, 2 SNOWY EGRETS remained to at least
September 2nd. 1 LEAST BITTERN was present at the Karn plant the same day.
