Post Ernesto birding has proven frustrating, but a few nice finds were
to be had today.
This morning Andy Baldelli found an adult BRIDLED TERN feeding among the
pilings at the south end of the Ponquogue Bridge at Shinnecock Bay. The
bird disappeared at about 10:45am and has not been seen since. Also seen
in the vicinity of the bridge were 1 WHIMBREL, 7 MARBLED GODWITS, on the
island east of the bridge, and 2 GREAT CORMORANTS.
At Mecox Bay there was a WILSON'S STORM PETREL, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, and
1 CASPIAN TERN.
Sagaponack Pond had a LESSER BLACK BACKED GULL, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER
and 1 adult AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER.
At the sod fields along Rt 105 in Riverhead BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS
have been seen daily since Aug 27, with a maximum of 10 on Aug 31 and 4
still present yesterday. These birds have been east of Rt 105 and about
a quarter mile south of Sound Ave. Up to 8 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS have
been present as well.
Good Birding to All!
