This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for September 7, 2006,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are

Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Baltimore Oriole, Great Crested Flycatchers,
Swallow-tailed
Kite, Tricolored Heron, Red-shouldered Hawk, Sabine's Gull.
After the rains, things are green again, though there have been some bad
floods.

In Taos County:
JJ at Horseshoe Lake in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area had a THREE-TOED
WOODPECKER, PEREGRINE FALCON, and PINE GROSBEAKS on September 3.
In San Miguel County:
At the Las Vegas Refuge on September 2 CR found a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, two
PEREGRINES, an EASTERN KINGBIRD, and two STILT SANDPIPERS.
In Colfax County:
JJ had a GOSHAWK in the Valle Vidal unit on September 4.
DC on the Maxwell Refuge reported the finding of owls at the roost on the
east side of highway A-5 is spotty with a LONG-EARED OWL on August 24, and a
BARN OWL on August 27. He had a good number of sparrows on August 31 with five
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS. JJ on September 4 had 19 BLACK TERNS, a BARN OWL,
and a BURROWING OWL on the refuge. The same day CR saw a BLACK-NECKED STILT, a
LEAST FLYCATCHER, an AMERICAN REDSTART, an EASTERN KINGBIRD, and still many
sparrows including CASSIN'S.
At Stubblefield Lake on September 4 CR reported a SANDERLING, 72 BLACK
TERNS, and a COMMON TERN.
DC had at Sugarite State Park at Raton two ACORN WOODPECKERS, an OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, and two CASSIN'S VIREOS.
There is now a gas station in Maxwell.
In Union County:
CR on September 3 at Clayton Lake saw a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER, a LEAST
FLYCATCHER, a BLACK PHOEBE, NINE EASTERN PHOEBES, three RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and
a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER,
He had an EASTERN KINGBIRD at the cattle feed lot north of Clayton and 2
LEAST FLYCATCHRRS and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH at a woodlot at Seneca.
At the town of Mt. Dora he was amazed by 58 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS in a
3-mile stretch. And at Wetherly Lake east of Des Moines there was a PEREGRINE,
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, many waterfowl, and 32 BLACK TERNS.
In Cibola County:
CJG reports a good migration at the El Morro NM with in the last week a
NASHVILLE WARBLER with many others, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, GRAY, DUSKY, and a
WILLOW FLYCATCHER, WESTERN SCREECH-OWL, CASSIN'S VIREOS, and a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW.
In Sandoval County:
BV on September 4 had a "near fall-out" of migrants at the north end of the
Corrales Bosque including two CASSIN'S VIREOS, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, a
POORWILL, three OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS, a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and a possible
female HOODED WARBLER.
In Bernalillo County:
RV on September 3 said a CASSIN'S VIREO was banded at the Rio Grande Nature
Center.
At the Tramway Wetlands in Albuquerque on September 2 JJ had a SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, an AVOCET, and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER. On September 4 BV saw the
plover and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER there.
In Guadalupe County:
At Vaughn on August 31 JO found a RED-EYED VUREO and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
WW on August 23 at Power Dam Park in Santa Rosa had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER
and an EASTERN PHOEBE. JP on August 26 found the phoebe, a MISSISSIPPI KITE,
and three CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS.
In DeBaca County:
JP and others on August 26 at Sumner Lake had an immature COMMON TERN. CL
saw it again on September 1. An OSPREY was below the dam. MB on September 3
reported a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER below the dam.
At Bosque Redondo Park near Fort Sumner CL on September 1 saw an EASTERN
KINGBIRD and several CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS,
In Roosevelt County:
JO on September 2 photographed a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER in Milnesand. It
was seen later in the day by CL and by JP on September 3. JP also found a
male BALTIMORE ORIOLE there. Both birds were seen by MB, JB, and JNM on
September 3.
GK on August 28 had a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE fly over the ENMU campus in
Portales with MISSISSIPPI KITES. JO did not find the Swallow-tail on August 31,
but found 20 Mississippi Kites on the campus.
At the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose on August 26 JP recorded a
LEAST FLYCATCHER, eastern BELL'S VIREO, two female ORCHARD ORIOLES, and a
female-plumaged PAINTED BUNTING. On August 28 BW and JNM found two GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHERS, the orioles, and a CASSIN'S VIREO. WW on August 31 saw a
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, and the Least Flycatcher. JO on August 31 found a male and
female AMERICAN REDSTART. CL at the trap on September 1 had an OVENBIRD, the two
redstarts, and the flycatcher. On September 2 he saw a CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER, one redstart, the flycatcher, two SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, and a CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW.
JO at Pep on September 2 had a BLUE-HEADED VIREO. JP and WW had the vireo
and two SWAINSON'S THRUSHES there on September 3.
BW and JNM on August 28 at Elida saw a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, a LEAST
FLYCATCHER, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and two CASSIN'S VIREOS.
GK on August 29 at ponds southeast of Portales on Co. 8 had over 60 BLACK
TERNS.
BW reported that because of the bad content of the water at the Portales
Sewage ponds few birds have stopped there lately.
In Curry Co unty:
BW and JNM at the Clovis Sewage Ponds had an immature TRICOLORED HERON,
PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and two STILT SANDPIPERS.
MB saw the heron on September 3.
In Chaves County:
GW. BW, and JNM on August 28 had a female WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER at the
headquarters of the Bitter Lake Refuge at Roswell, but very few shorebirds. CL
on September 4 saw an AMERICAN REDSTART female at the headquarters, a MARBLED
GODWIT, and BLACK TERNS.
In Socorro County:
MB on September 6 had an adult SABINE'S GULL circling over I-25 at the San
Acacia exit.
CL on August 28 at Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro found a
GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER. On August 30 JO, GP, and MB again found the
flycatcher and a CANADA WARBLER. The warbler was not seen by WK, JS, or PMc on
August
31. JS saw the flycatcher on September 1. CB did not find it September 3.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio CL on August 28 had a good
number of LAZULI BUNTINGS with a singing INDIGO BUNTING. More than 100 CATTLE
EGRETS were on NM 1 north of the refuge. CB on September 3 found a MARBLED
GODWIT at the entrance ponds and three VERMILION FLYCATCHERS. He had a lone
SANDHILL CRANE on the fields south of San Antonio and several CLAY-COLORED
SPARROWS on the Farm-to-Market Rd. east of San Antonio.
In Sierra County:
JO on August 11 found the shorebird flats at South Montecello Point were
under water at Elephant Butte Lake.
In Catron County:
At the Gila Cliff Dwellings PY on August 27 reported a PYGMY OWL.
MSt on August 19 had two MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS at feeders in Mogollon.
In Grant County:
On August 27 PSt found four possible NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS on Roberts Lake.
DG on August 24 and 25 found the road up Burro Peak was bad from the storms,
but saw several HERMIT WARBLERS, and YELLOW-EYED JUNCO on the north side),
OLIVE WARBLER, HUTTON'S VIREO, and RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH with singing GRAY
VIREOS..
In Hidalgo County:
JO on August 26 in the main campground of Clanton Canyon had three HERMIT
WARBLERS and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
JO on August 25 and 26 in the Arizona part of Guadalupe Canyon had up to
three GRAY HAWKS. In the New Mexico part there was a ZONE-TAILED HAWK and up to
eight VARIED BUNTINGS.
At Dunagan’s Crossing on Co. 1 south of Animas JO saw a BOTTERI’S SPARROW
at the usual spot at mile marker 14.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because of
events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
JO had a BARN OWL at the Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus on August 24.
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.
In Dona Ana County:
CL on September 6 had an immature male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD in Mesilla Park
near the swimming pool.
DG at his home near Las Cruces has had quite a few migrants with a
DICKCISSEL on August 30 and September 2.
JN at his home near Mesilla had CAVE SWALLOWS fly over on August 27.
JZ and MS at their home near Radium Springs on August 27 had a ZONE-TAILED
HAWK appear. The hawk was eeen again and photographed August 30.
JN at the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park on August 19 found a LEAST BITTERN. JD
had the bittern and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER present on September 1. On
September 5 JN saw two OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS, an EASTERN PHOEBE, a
female-plumaged AMERICAN REDSTART, two of the sandpipers, many swallows, four ORCHARD
ORIOLES, and 110 WHITE-FACED IBIS there.
On September 2 at Aguirre Springs on the east side of the Organ Mts. there
were for him two ACORN WOODPECKERS, a GRACE'S WARBLER, and a stooping GOLDEN
EAGLE.
JN found water in Isaak Lake northeast of Las Cruces on August 22.
In Otero County:
CBr on August 26 in the Sacramento Mountains on Forest Road 64 south of
Sunspot at the Chiquita Creek/Scott Able area had a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET. On
Scott Able Rd. they found a PYGMY OWL on August 27.
CL and CBr found good shorebird habitat at the Holloman Lakes. CL had nine
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS on September 1. There was a good passerine migration on
August 28 with eight CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, a CASSIN'S VIREO, a DICKCISSEL,
two WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, and two BLACK TERNS.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs near Whites City JNM and BW on August 27 discovered a
calling COMMON GROUND-DOVE, CATBIRD, ZONE-TAILED HAWK, and a NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH. CL on September 4 had a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER and saw again the
RED-SHOULERED HAWK flying along the stream.
BW and JNM on August 27 on co. 34 east of Brantley Lake saw six UPLAND
SANDPIPERS, four HARRIS'S HAWKS, and many SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS.

On Sunday, September 10, Central Audubon will travel to Roswell and the

Southwestern Audubon will bird to Fort Bayard east of Silver City on
Saturday, September 16, in a riparian area with a small waterfall. Contact is David
