Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September 7,
2006. This report covers the period from September 1st to September 7th
and will be updated again on the 14th.
The best sighting of the week came from Trustom Pond NWR on the 7th. A
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was discovered in the early morning along the Red Maple
Swamp Trail, on the way to Osprey Point. Also seen that day were: 2 BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, 4 NORTHEN PARULA, 3 YELLOW WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER,
1 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER 1 PINE WARBLER, 3 BLACKPOLL, 4 BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, 2 PALM, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, 3 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 2 YELLOW-BILLED
CUCKOO, 2 EASTERN WOOD PEWEE, 1 WARBLING VIREO, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 22
BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 8 BLACK TERN. Eight BLACK TERN were seen over Trustom Pond
on the 5th, and 4 were seen on the 4th. Also on the 4th, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 2 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 1 CANADA WARBLER
and 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER.
On the 1st, at a banding station in Kingston, 2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and a
WILSON'S WARLBER were reported.
At Walker Farm in Barrington on the 7th, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 3 INDIGO
BUNTING, 2 SAVANNAH SPARROW and 7 BOBOLINK.
At the turf fields along Heaton Orchard Road in Richmond, 5 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER were found on the 3rd and 4th, and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was found there
on the 2nd. A single
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPER were found along Switch
Road near Chariho High School on the 7th.
A storm with strong East winds on the 3rd produced some interesting
sightings. At Point Judith in Narraganset, 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, several WILSON'S
STORM PETRELS and a BLACK TERN were found. At Wheeler Beach also in Point
Judith, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were observed roosting in the parking lot.
At Third Beach restoration area in Middletown, 5 FORSTER'S TERN, 7 LEAST
TERN, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER,1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 4
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER and a NORTHERN HARRIER on the 3rd.
On the 5th, at the Ninigret Pond tidal flats at the Charlestown Breachway
there was 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER and an adult BALD EAGLE. On the 1st, a juvenile
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was observed.
Finally, seen along Route 95 in Exeter, 1 COMMON RAVEN on the 4th.
