BROAD-WINGED HAWK
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH

Saturday, September 3
An unconfirmed report of a GREAT GRAY OWL was received, seen Saturday
afternoon on the west shore of Elk Lake. However, based on the description,
location and the time of year this undoubtedly was a misidentified BARRED
OWL.
Friday, September 2
HEERMANN'S GULL numbers have spiked recently as per normal,
with large groups being reported at Clover Point and in Juan de Fuca
Strait Friday and over the weekend as well.
Thursday, September 1
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK and a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH were
observed at the Rocky Point Bird Observatory in Metchosin. Please
note that the observatory is on restricted DND property and is not open
to the public.
Wednesday, August 31
A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen at Victoria's Clover Point in the
morning.
Tuesday, August 30
At the foot of Bowker Avenue in Oak Bay, there were 24 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS plus 9 species of shorebirds including 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS,
4 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 5 SURFBIRDS and 5 DOWITCHERS.
At Holland Point in Victoria, there was 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and 2
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.
Monday, August 29
At East Sooke Park, along a trail from the end of Coppermine Road
to Mount McQuire, were 2 BLUE GROUSE and 1 NORTHERN SAW-WHET
OWL.
At Bowker Avenue in Oak Bay, there were 55 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 5
SURFBIRDS and 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS.
At Clover Point in Victoria, there were 2 MERLINS.
Sunday, August 28
An AMERICAN REDSTART was banded at Rocky Point Bird Observatory in
Metchosin. This is only the third record for the AMERICAN REDSTART for
the Victoria checklist area. Also at Rocky Point were 30 migrating
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE.
At the end of Bowker Avenue in Oak Bay were 68 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS, 4 SURFBIRDS, a CASPIAN TERN and 9 DOWITCHERS.
At Rithet's Bog in Saanich, there was a VIRGINIA RAIL and 2 BLUE-WINGED
TEAL.
