This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 8th, 2006.
A WESTERN REEF HERON, first discovered in Maine in the harbor behind Frisbee's
General Store in Kittery Point on August 18th, was first seen in New Hampshire on
August 19th and continues to be seen in New Castle. It was last reported on
September 6th. It has been seen along Route 1B from the general area of the
Riverside Cemetery in New Castle looking towards the Wentworth Hotel and from near
where a sign is visible that says "Goat Island Saltwater Fishing Access". The best
strategy for locating the bird has been to scan around the islands and up the
channels near the Wentworth Hotel at low tide. The heron is often in the company of
SNOWY EGRETS. During the past week it has also been seen on mudflats west of the
Wentworth Coolidge Mansion.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the first pond at the Trails at Pickering
Ponds in Rochester on September 4th.
A juvenile LITTLE GULL was seen off of Seabrook Beach on September 2nd.
15 GREATER SHEARWATERS, and 3 MANX SHEARWATERS were seen off of Little Boar's Head
in North Hampton on September 2nd. 3 JAEGERS were also seen, but the exact species
was undetermined due to the distance of the view.
139 LAUGHING GULLS were seen off of Little Boar's Head in Hampton and 10 were seen
on Jenness Beach in Rye all on September 4th.
10 STILT SANDPIPERS were seen in Meadow Pond in Hampton on September 4th.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was seen on the beach at Plaice Cove between the south end
of North Hampton beach and north of rocks located off of Bicentennial Park in
Hampton on September 7th.
85 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 20 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, 200 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 25 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and 4 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS were all seen in Meadow Pond in Rye on September 2nd.
6 RED-NECKED GREBES were seen from the cove north of the Seacoast Science Center at
Odiorne Point State Park on September 4th.
A juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at the fresh water pond along Route 1A
at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on September 4th.
A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was seen at the edge of the tidal pools located
along Route 1A in Rye just south of Odiorne Point State Park on September 3rd.
15 INDIGO BUNTINGS were seen in a cornfield located along Turnberry Lane in Stratham
on September 4th.
A WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard in Jefferson on September 6th.
7 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen foraging near the Gulfside Trail on Mount Washington on
September 1st.
Raptor migration has already begun, and there have already been 95 raptors
consisting of 7 different species reported from Pack Monadnock in Peterborough since
September 1st.
Reports of migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS continued, and several GREAT EGRETS were also
reported from inland locations, all during the past week.
Landbird migration is also underway as evidenced by many reports of migrants during
the past week, including WILSON'S, TENNESSEE, BLACKPOLL, and MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, as
well as AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN PARULA, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.
