Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Thursday September 7 at 10am. To report a bird sighting, call

The immature ARCTIC TERN, originally found with an adult Arctic at
Chestermere Lake east of Calgary, was seen several times this week by
various observers. Ian Halladay most recently spotted it at 7am September 6
near the boat launch by Tim Hortons north of Hwy 1A. The adult bird has not
been seen since September 2. An immature BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen at the
Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on September 2 by Jim St. Laurent. Jim also
reported two or more HARLEQUIN DUCKS at the sanctuary on the same day, and
Dwight Knapik found two female Harlequins there September 6.
Jason Rogers observed the first SABINE'S GULL of the fall season, a
juvenile, at Vermilion Lakes in Banff National Park on August 31.
The GREEN HERON recently seen at the marsh in the Calgary Zoo Canadian Wilds
section was apparently photographed there on August 16 by Danny Swainson of
Surrey BC. For information on this sighting call Dusty Reid at 258-1311.
Carol Coulter observed an immature or fall-plumage adult CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER at her home in Calgary Southview on September 4. Joyce Moore had an
OVENBIRD fly into a window at her home in Calgary Mayfair this past week.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert will be Monday September 11.
BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the first Wednesday of the month, September - May
at 7:30 pm, Room 211, BioSciences Building, University of Calgary. The next
meeting will be on Wednesday October 4. Richard Knapton will speak on
"Birding in Borneo."
