Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Monday September 11 at 1pm. To report a bird sighting, call

A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was sighted at 10am September 9 at 63 Discovery
Ridge Point SW in Calgary by Linda and Bob Heidemann. The bird was re-found
the following morning in the Heidemanns' yard by several observers. If
accepted, this will be the first provincial record for Yellow-throated
Warbler. A western subspecies of PALM WARBLER was noted in the same area by
Terry Korolyk. Terry also saw a juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER on September
4 at the mud flats across from the Heather Glen Golf Course just north of
Glenmore Trail.

Tony Timmons reported a flock of 45 WHITE-FACED IBIS on September 9 at a
slough 1km south of 530 Avenue East and 248 Street East. Sidney Moore had a
GREAT GRAY OWL in her back yard in the Dalhousie subdivision of Calgary on
September 9. Another -- or the same bird -- was spotted at The Chapters at
Crowfoot Station.

A variety of warblers is still passing through he Calgary area. On September
9 Jerry Pilny and Alan Fishkin saw an OVENBIRD and a MAGNOLIA WARBLER in
Burnsmead, Fish Creek Provincial Park, and the same day a NASHVILLE WARBLER
was reported by Steve Lane at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Terry Korolyk found
an AMERICAN REDSTART in the Glenfield area of Fish Creek PP, also on
September 9.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert will be Thursday September 14.

BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the first Wednesday of the month, September - May
at 7:30 pm, Room 211, BioSciences Building, University of Calgary. The next
meeting will be on Wednesday October 4. Richard Knapton will speak on
"Birding in Borneo." Doors open at 7:00 pm.

Sat Sep 23, 8:30am: Birding/Nature at Beaverdam Flats Park. Meet S
parking lot at Lynnview Rd & Lynnview Way S of 62 Av SE. N from Glenmore Tr.

Sat Sep 23: Wildcat Hills Nature Hike. Full day 11 km walk, easy pace
and suitable for all ages. View mountain/prairie vistas, fall wildflowers &

Sat Sep 30, 1:30pm: See captive Whooping Cranes at the Zoo Ranch.

Sun Oct 1, 8am: Elbow River Birding Survey. Meet Stanley Park on 42 Av
SW, just W of Macleod Tr. Walk to Glenmore Reservoir, drive back. (3.5hrs).
Call leaders, Aileen Pelzer and Gus Yaki, 243-2248 to ensure vehicle space
for return.
