Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September
14, 2006. This report covers the period from September 8th to September 14th
and will be updated again on the 21st.
Trustom Pond NWR had many unusual and rare birds this past week. The
PROTONOTARY WARBLER found on the 7th, was seen again on the 10th and 11th. A
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen on the 8th, and a KENTUCKY WARBLER was seen on the
8th and 9th. Single CONNECTICUT WARLBER sightings occurred on the 8th, 10th
and 12th. Other warblers sighted included: WILSON'S, CANADA, BLACK-THROATED
BLUE, PRAIRE, NASHVILLE, MAGNOLIA, BLACKPOLL, BLACKBURNIAN and PALM WARBLER.
On the 10th, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen at the junction of the Red Maple
Swamp and Osprey Point trail. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen on the
9th, and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was observed on the 11th. A PHILADELPHIA
VIREO was found on the 10th and 13th. Both BLACK-BILLED and YELLOW-BILLED
CUCKOO were seen, and 9 BLACK TERN were seen over the pond on the 9th.
On the 8th at the Kingston Banding Station, 1 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and a
belated report of a TENNESSEE WARBLER on the 7th.
Another rare find was an AMERICAN AVOCET at the Ninigret Pond tidal flats at
the Charlestown Breachway on the 13th.
Seen very infrequently this season, a WHIMBREL was spotted at East Beach in
Charlestown on the 9th.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 13th: 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 1 AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVER, 11 RED KNOT, 20 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 3 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, and 1 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW.
On the 10th at Walkers Farm in Barrington, 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 2 INDIGO
BUNTING and 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPER.
Finally, on a dedicated pelagic out of Galilee, 150 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, 10
RED PHALAROPE, 1 juvenile BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 4 BLACK
TERN, 1 GREATER SHEARWATER and 20 WILSON'S STORM-PETREL.
