Alabama Rare Bird Report – Saturday, September 16, 2006.
Up to 30 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS have been seen in recent days at the
Sunbelt Sod Farm in Shelby County. To reach the farm from US 280 in Harpersville,
turn south on AL 25 and travel 4.7 miles to the farm on the left. Remember not
to drive or walk on the grass at this or any sod farm. DO NOT drive on wet,
muddy roads at this site. Remember there are now gates on all entrance roads
and these are only be open during farm working hours – typically weekdays.
Birders are still welcome to enter through open gates and bird but must leave
prior to gate closure in late afternoon to avoid being locked-in! DO NOT
TRESPASS ONTO THIS PRIVATE PROPERTY WHEN THE GATES ARE CLOSED! In addition, birding
group size must be limited to three cars! Please follow these guidelines to
the letter to avoid all of us losing access to this good birding site. [DeAL
31-H9][BGtA p. 164]
A FRANKLIN’S GULL was seen 9/13 above Wilson Dam near Florence. [DeAL
17-C7][BGtA p. 213] A morning walk at the nearby TVA Wetlands trail 9/15 produced a
nice collection of migrants including “TRAIL’S” and YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER. To reach this location from AL 43, turn right on in front of the state
trooper’s office onto Reservation Road at the sign for Wilson Dam. In about 1.0
mile, turn at the second right toward the IFDC (or complex F) buildings and
then right again in front of the wetlands lab. Park in the lot and walk the
abandoned road behind the gate to the right past the wetlands and into the wooded
area. The trail runs for around 0.5 miles to the old greenhouse area. [DeAL
17-D7]
The world-famous Hummer/Bird Study Group will be banding at Ft. Morgan
October 7-20. Visitors are welcome! Please note: this banding operation takes
place on fort property so expect to pay the standard fort entrance fee. In the
interest of maintaining a positive birder image with those administrating the
fort, PLEASE be sure you pay your way!!!
The next meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be held on
Dauphin Island October 13-15.
