WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday September 18, 2006

A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found in the east meadows of Northampton on Friday.
The bird was seen along Hockanum Road between the overpass and the red barn.
Also seen were 2 MERLINS, 2 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, 6 AMERICAN PIPITS, a
MOURNING WARBLER and 2 PALM WARBLERS.

Seen in Quabbin Park at the Quabbin Reservoir were a GOLDEN EAGLE, 96
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 2 YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS, 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 4
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a SWAINSON’S THRUSH, 6 NORTHERN PARULAS, a PRAIRIE
WARBLER, a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 5 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 5 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, 2
OVENBIRDS, and a WILSON’S WARBLER.

Reported in nearby Belchertown were a COMMON NIGHTHAWK, 2 RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLETS, 3 NORTHERN PARULAS and a MAGNOLIA WARBLER, an OVENBIRD, and a
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.

A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and 11 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were present in Southwick,
and seen in Northfield were 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, 3
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, a PEREGRINE FALCON and 2 AMERICAN PIPITS.

A walk into Gates 22 and 10 on the western side of the Quabbin Reservoir
produced 11 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 3 NORTHERN PARULAS, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, 4
MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, and a LINCOLN’S SPARROW.

Spotted around the hawkwatch site in Granville were 9 RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRDS, 5 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 2 AMERICAN PIPITS, a NASHVILLE WARBLER,
9 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 8 NORTHERN PARULAS, a PRAIRIE WARBLER, a PALM WARBLER, 3
BLACKPOLL WARBLERS and an OVENBIRD.

Reports from a day-long survey of birds in the Ware River watershed included a
WINTER WREN, 19 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a CAPE MAY WARBLER, a BAY-BREASTED
WARBLER, 170 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, 4 BLACKBURNIAN, WARBLER 2 CONNECTICUT
WARBLERS, and 2 PALM WARBLERS.

OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were noted in Granby and Barre. PHILADELPHIA VIREOS
were seen in Russell, Barre and on the hawkwatch site at Mt. Tom, and an
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER and a NORTHERN HARRIER were reported in Northampton.

Hawkwatch totals the last three days on Mt. Shatterack in Russell were 5
OSPREYS, 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 65 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1,052 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, 4 AMERICAN KESTRELS and a MERLIN.

Seen over Blueberry Hill in Granville were 8 OSPREYS, 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 3
BALD EAGLES, 80 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 6 COOPER’S HAWKS, 502 BROAD-WINGEDHAWKS,
61 AMERICAN KESTRELS, and 4 MERLINS.

Totals at Mt. Tom were 6 OSPREYS, 5 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 4 BALD EAGLES, 36
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 4 COOPER”S HAWKS, 1,378 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 10 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, and 4 MERLINS.

Counted at Barre Falls were 16 OSPREYS, 6 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 3 BALD EAGLES, 65
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 6 COOPER’S HAWKS, 464 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 10 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, and 4 MERLINS.
