Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September
8th, 2005. This report covers the period from September 2nd to September 8th and
will be updated again on the 15th.

Shorebirds are still on the move with a few passerine migrants noted as well
this week.

A high count of 22 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was observed on the sod farm along
Indian Corner Road in Slocum on the 2nd. There was also 6 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER and 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER.

On the 8th, in a large puddle on the turf field along Switch Road, north of
Chariho High School, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 WESTERN
SANDPIPER, 26 LEAST SANDPIPER, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 1
PECTORAL SANDPIPER.

At the Charlestown Breachway: 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVER, 1 CASPIAN TERN, 1 BLACK TERN, 1 FOSTER'S
TERN, 2 ROSEATE TERN, 1 WHIMBREL, 5 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 15 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 5 MARBLED GODWIT and 1 RED KNOT.

On the 3rd, 1 COMMON RAVEN was spotted flying over Route 1 in South Kingston.
Another Raven was reported near the waterfall along Ponagansett Road in
Foster, and a WILSON'S WARBLER was found on the hillside above the waterfall. Two
SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen from
Ponagansett Bridge on the Barden reservoir.

On the 2nd, a high count of 152 COMMON NIGHTHAWK in North Smithfield.

Reports from Trustom Pond this week included: 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 BROWN
THRASHER, 3 BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, 3 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 3 WHITE-EYED VIREO,
4 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 1 CANADA
WARBLER and 2 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 5 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 6 WOOD DUCK on the pond.

On the 1st, a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was found in Kingston.

Owls, hawks, eagles and other live birds of prey will thrill the audience
during live presentations and flight programs at New England's largest raptor
event. The Audubon Society of Rhode Island will host its popular 3rd Annual
Raptor Weekend, on September 10 and 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the
Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol, R.I.
