This is the Thursday, September 21, 2006 Missouri Rare Bird Alert, a
statewide service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the
birding community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled
from reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual,
or accidental on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds (with
revisions in 2004 and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or “accidental”.
(Note that some birds may be considered rare only during a particular

The highlight of this report is a LAUGHING GULL (listed as a casual
transient away from the Mississippi River) in the Northwest. Another
Laughing Gull has also been reported in the St. Louis area (where it
is listed as a rare transient).
ST. LOUIS AREA
One juvenile LAUGHING GULL at Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary,
first reported on Sept. 12, was relocated by Josh Uffman on Sunday,
Sept. 17.
Two of four SANDHILL CRANES that have been reported both at Clarence
Cannon NWR and B.K. Leach Mem. CA (Lincoln Co.) were seen by Al and
Lois Smith along Norton Rd. in B.K. Leach CA on Saturday, Sept. 16.
SOUTHWEST
On Thursday, Sept. 21, Larry Herbert reported one YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER (rare in the west) at Walter Woods CA (Newton Co.).
KANSAS CITY AREA
At Burr Oak Woods CA (Jackson Co.), one PHILADELPHIA VIREO (a rare
migrant in the west) was reported Sunday, Sept. 17 by Jennifer Reidy.
The bird was found with a mixed flock of migrants along the Bethany
Falls trail.
On Monday, Sept. 18, a “pelagic” outing of 18 birders on two pontoons
on Smithville Lake (Clay Co.) yielded up-close looks at an immature
SABINE’S GULL. This bird was relocated by Doug Willis the following
afternoon, Tuesday, Sept. 19, from Shelter #9 of the picnic arm of
the Crow’s Creek area of Smithville Lake. Later in the day on
Tuesday, Randy Cartwright and Jennifer Reidy were unable to relocate
the SABINE’S GULL but did find one AMERICAN AVOCET.
At Bean Lake (Platte Co.), Frances Cramer reported three PLEGADIS SP.
(dark ibis) on Sunday, Sept. 17.
NORTHWEST
One adult LAUGHING GULL transitioning into winter plumage was
reported at Squaw Creek NWR (Holt Co.) by Larry Lade on Tuesday,
Sept. 19. The bird was seen from the observation tower at the end of
the trail at Eagle Pool. On Friday, Sept. 15, Kyle Driggers reported
17 PLEGADIS SP. (dark ibis) at the refuge.
One immature PLEGADIS SP. (dark ibis) was found by Ted Rights at
Pershing SP (Linn Co.) Sunday, Sept. 17.
