Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September
21, 2006. This report covers the period from September 15th to September 21st
and will be updated again on the 28th.
The AMERICAN AVOCET found on the 13th at the Ninigret Pond tidal flats at
the Charlestown Breachway was seen again on the 16th and 19th. Six CASPIAN
TERN were also found there on the 19th, and two lingered until the 21st. A
STILT SANDPIPER, 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPER were found
there on the 19th.
On the 16th and 17th, 2 BLACK VULTURES were found near White Brook in
Carolina.
At Third Beach restoration area in Middletown, 3 WHIMBREL and 5 STILT
SANDPIPER on the 19th.
Three SOLITARY SANDPIPER were seen at the Perryville Trout Hatchery on the
19th.
On the 16th, at Heaton Orchard Road in Richmond, 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER.
On the 20th at Napatree Point in Westerly, 24 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 2
RED KNOT, 1 DUNLIN, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were
found.
At Trustom Pond NRW a TENNESSEE WARBLER was found on the 16th, and a
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen on the 19th. Other highlights from the 16th
included: 1
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 5 PALM WARBLER, 7 BLACKPOLL
WARBLER, 2 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 4 NORTHERN PARULA and 1 SWAINSON'S THRUSH.
A WILSON'S WARBLER was reported on the 20th. Ducks on the pond included: 5
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 8 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 3 WOOD DUCK and 30
RUDDY DUCK.
A cold front with Northwest winds brought a few interesting birds into our
area on the 21st. At Camp Cronin in Narraganset, 1 DICKSCISSEL was seen, and
at Walkers Farm in Barrington, 1
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found. On Block Island, birds found at the north
end of the island included: 1 RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, 17 species of warbler
including, 4 CAPE MAY, 2 BLACKBURNIAN, 1 BAY-BREASTED, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 1
NASHVILLE, 3 MAGNOLIA, 2 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, a male NORTHERN HARRIER, several
MERLINS and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO.
