Compiled 8 September, 2005

This is the Thursday, September 8, 2005 Missouri Bird Alert, a
statewide service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the
birding community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled
from reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state. The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual,
or accidental on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds.
Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the “Species Mentioned” section
are listed as “casual” or “accidental”. (Note that some birds may be
considered rare only during a particular season or in a particular
part of the state.)

Wetland areas in the St. Louis area yielded a few rarities this week.
On Friday, Sept. 2, David Rogles spotted one SANDERLING among other
shorebirds in the slough at Winfield Lock and Dam (Lincoln Co.).

One GLOSSY IBIS was reported by Missouri Department of Conservation
staff at the Bittern Basin unit of B.K. Leach CA (Lincoln Co.) on
Tuesday, Sept. 6. To get to the Bittern Basin unit, take Mo Hwy 79
north past the town of Elsberry and turn right on Hwy P. Just
opposite the turnoff to Prairie Slough CA is a parking lot for
Bittern Basin. Walk away from the road on the levee to access the
location where the ibis was last seen.

Rare hummingbirds are apparently making their way into the state. In
the northwest, Doug Willis observed one SELASPHORUS SP. (RUFOUS/
ALLEN’S HUMMINGBIRD) near Iatan Marsh (Platte Co.) on Tuesday, Sept.
6. This bird was seen briefly again by Doug on Thursday, Sept. 8.
Iatan Marsh is situated west and south of Mo Hwy 45 and south of
Swamp Rd., just east of Bean Lake. Swamp Road is the first gravel
road to the left (west) off of Mo Hwy 45, north of the town of Iatan.
Look for the hummingbird along the first mile after the turnoff from
Mo Hwy 45.

A single RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was reported by Lester Pannell south of
Lebanon (Laclede Co.) on or before Wednesday, Sept. 7.

In the central part of the state, Steve Kinder reported four adult
SANDHILL CRANES at Grand Pass CA (Saline Co.) on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
