EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, September 22.
Two AMERICAN AVOCETS were seen at Stage Island Pool near the south
end of Plum Island on Tuesday, and a third or one of these same two avocets
was seen today in Newburyport Harbor. Yet another AMERICAN AVOCET
found at the Wellfleet Bay sanctuary in South Wellfleet on Wednesday has
not been seen since.
Other recent reports from Plum Island have included 46 AMERICAN WIGEON,
110 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 20 GREAT EGRETS, 75 SNOWY EGRETS,
6 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 135
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, roughly 100 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
8 WHIMBREL, 10 RED KNOTS, 240 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS,
11 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 1 STILT
SANDPIPER, 51 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 4 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 5 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 6 BROWN THRASHERS,
15 species of wood warblers including one YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER,
1 WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, 1 DARK-EYED JUNCO, and 5
BALTIMORE ORIOLES.
Migrant raptors counted on Wednesday over Mt Wachusett in Princeton
included 4 OSPREYS, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 301 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS, and 1 MERLIN, and seabirds seen
this week from a research vessel on George's Bank included GREATER
SHEARWATER, AUDUBON'S SHEARWATER, LEACH'S STORM-
PETREL, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, LONG-TAILED JAEGER,
PARASITIC JAEGER, POMARINE JAEGER, GREAT SKUA, SOUTH
POLAR SKUA, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and RED PHALAROPE.
Seen in Lincoln today were 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 4 SOLITARY
VIREOS, 3 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 11 species of wood warblers
including 14 BLACKPOLLS, 10 NORTHERN PARULAS, AND 1
CONNECTICUT WARBLER, 2 INDIGO BUNTINGS, 2 LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS, and 1 DICKCISSEL, and seen recently in Woburn were 1
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, 7 HOUSE WRENS, 3 BROWN THRASHERS,
and 15 species of wood warblers including 4 NASHVILLES, 14 BLACK-
THROATED GREENS, 1 CONNECTICUT, and 1 MOURNING WARBLER.
Reports from Nantucket this week included 1 HOODED MERGANSER,
1 LITTLE BLUE HERON, 8 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 75
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 125 LAUGHING GULLS, 1 RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO,
10,000 TREE SWALLOWS, and 1 DICKCISSEL, and recent miscellaneous
reports have included 11 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS at the Joppa Flats
Education Center in Newburyport, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW
in Woburn, a WHITE-EYED VIREO at Nahanton Park in Newton,
single YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS in the Fenway section of Boston
and in South Boston, a HOODED WARBLER at Wompatuck State Park
in Hingham, a HOODED WARBLER and a MOURNING WARBLER
in Nahant, and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER and a DARK-EYED
JUNCO in Scituate.
