There were 2 reports of SABINE'S GULLS south of Calgary over the weekend.
Andrew Slater observed an adult bird off the east end of the dike between
Basins 1 & 2 at Frank Lake east of High River on the morning of Sunday,
Sept. 24; then on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 24, Terry Korolyk watched a
juvenile SABINE'S GULL at the south end of Clear Lake 15 kms. due east of
Stavely. Frank Lake is 6 kms east of Hwy 2 on Hwy 23 while Clear Lake can
be accessed via Twp Rds 140 or 142 off Hwy 2 at Stavely.
Shorebirds were in good numbers and variety at Langdon Reservoir east of
Calgary on Sunday, Sept. 24. Birds seen there by Bill Wilson, John Riddell
and Ray Wershler included at least 23 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS and possibly
as many as 30 - 50; 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS; "dozens" of BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS; 3 SANDERLINGS, and approximately 1000 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. They
also reported at least one, possibly 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS. In the mudflats
off Rge Rd 261, at Clear Lake, Sept 24, Terry Korolyk observed 4 AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVERS and 7 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS amongst other shorebirds. At the
south end, Terry saw 21 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and an unidentified
adult SWAN. Tim McNeill reported SANDHILL CRANES calling at Frank Lake
Sept. 24 while other weekend PEREGRINE reports included a juvenile seen by
Bill Walker south of Turner Valley Sept. 23, and an adult on the east side
of Frank Lake seen by Andrew Slater Sept. 24.
Weekend Scoter reports included 3 SURF SCOTERS seen by Bill Wilson at Lake
Minnewanka Sept. 23, then another 6 seen by Bill at Ghost Reservoir off Hwy
1A west of Cochrane, also on Sept. 23. Bill reported a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL
near Two Jack Lake in Banff National Park the same day. A warbler that may
have been a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was seen in Griffith Woods off Hwy 8 in
Discovery Ridge west of Calgary on Sept. 24.
The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Thursday, September 28.
