WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday September 25, 2006
A DICKCISSEL was reported Saturday in the Bennett Meadow section of
Northfield. Also seen were two LINCOLN’S SPARROWS and 21 INDIGO BUNTINGS. Seen
at the sod farm in Northfield were 7 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, 3 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS, a LEAST and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and a
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
Two GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were found in the Northampton meadows along witha
VESPER SPARROW, a MERLIN a PEREGRINE FALCON, 8 AMERICAN PIPITS, 5 AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVERS, 65 TREE SWALLOWS, a BANK SWALLOW, 2 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS and 2
AMERICAN REDSTARTS.
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were seen in Granville and Northampton, A WINTER
WREN was in Springfield. A CERULEAN and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER were seen at
Turners Falls, and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER and an OVENBIRD in Southampton.
South Quabbin produced an EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, 9 RED-EYED VIREOS, a SWAINSON’S
THRUSH, 2 NORTHERN PARULAS, 4 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, a PRAIRIE WARBLER, 27
BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, an AMERICAN REDSTART, 5 SCARLET TANAGERS, and 2
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS.
Reported from Gate 40 at the Quabbin Reservoir were a MERLIN, 2 TENNESSEE
WARBLERS, 2 NORTHERN PARULAS, 3 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 2 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS, 4
BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, 2 CANADA WARBLERS, and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER.
Seen in Belchertown were a PEREGRINE FALCON, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 4 RED-EYED
VIREOS, a NASHVILLE, 2 MAGNOLIA and 4 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 5 BLACKPOLL
WARBLERS, an OVENBIRD, and a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
A LONG-EARED OWL was heard calling in evergreen woods along Cherry Hill Road
in Stockbridge. Seen in Pittsfield were a SWAINSON’S THRUSH, and MAGNOLIA,
BLACK-AND-WHITE, and CONNECTICUT WARBLERS.
Observed in Sheffield were a LEAST and a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, a
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 2 NASHVILLE, 3 MAGNOLIA, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED, and 2 BLACKPOLL
WARBLERS, a CANADA WARBLER and a LINCOLN’S SPARROW.
Birds noted on Blueberry Hill in Granville were an early LAPLAND LONGSPURthat
was present all week. Also seen were a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 13 RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLETS, an AMERICAN PIPIT, 5 NORTHERN PARULAS, 2 NASHVILLE, 19 MAGNOLIA, 13
PALM, 6 BLACKPOLL, a BAY-BREASTED and CAPE MAY WARBLERS, 3 AMERICAN REDSTARTS
and 3 PALM WARBLERS.
In Russell there were 2 BLACK VULTURES, 4 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a WARBLING
VIREO, a BLACK-AND-WHITE and 3 PALM WARBLERS, and in Southwick there were2
NORTHERN PARULAS, a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER.
Hawkwatch totals for the week in Granville were 70 OSPREYS, 10 BALD EAGLES, 10
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 70 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 454 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 43 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, a MERLIN and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
Counts in Russell totaled 76 OSPREYS, 7 BALD EAGLES, 4 NORTHERN HARRIERS,79
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 237 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 24 AMERICAN KESTRELS, and a
PEREGRINE FALCON.
Barre Falls numbers were 122 OSPREYS, 3 BALD EAGLES, 2 NORTHERN HARRIER, 114
SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 7 COOPER’S HAWKS, 1,387 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 27 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, and 3 MERLINS.
