Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, September 28, 2006.

MARYLAND:
CECIL/HARTFORD COUNTIES:
A possible SABINES GULL was seen at Conowingo Dam on September 24 (LE).

PENNSYLVANIA:
BEDFORD/SOMERSET COUNTIES:
Allegheny Front Hawk Watch reported tabulating 2 TURKEY VULTURES, 10
OSPREY, 2 BALD EAGLES, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 37 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 4
COOPER'S HAWKS, 76 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 20 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 7 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, 5 MERLINS and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON between September 21 and 27
(TD, GF, NF, BSt, EH, BG, TB, RMc).

CARBON COUNTY:
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was observed at the Blue Mountain Ski Area on
September 26 (BR, RR).

An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was found at Beltzville State Park on
September 27 (BR, RR).

CENTRE COUNTY:
Birds seen at the Penn State Retention Pond between September 20 and 25
included MALLARDS, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 1 HORNED GREBE, 1 EARED GREBE
(not seen after September 22), GREEN HERONS, 2 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS
and EASTERN BLUEBIRDS (JV, LGro).

The Centre Furnace Duck Pond yielded CANADA GEESE, MALLARDS, 1 NORTHERN
PINTAIL, 1 RING-NECKED DUCK and 1 GREAT BLUE HERON between September 20
and 21 (JV).

Toftrees produced WOOD DUCKS, GREEN HERONS, 1 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT
and 2 BELTED KINGFISHERS on September 20 (JV). A small flock of 4 BLUE
GROSBEAKS was observed at Toftrees Pond on September 22 (JV).

Birds found at Bald Eagle State Park on September 20 included 7
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 3 OSPREY and 1 tern (either COMMON or
FORSTER'S)(LGro).

A GREEN HERON and a flock of 6 PINE SISKINS were seen at Colyer Lake on
September 30 (JY).

There were 4 MALLARDS and 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at a pond between Vairo
Drive and Alder Court in Patton Township on September 20 (RC).

A RUFFED GROUSE was seen along Oneida in State College on September 27
(MJ).

CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch reported counting 55 OSPREY, 26 BALD EAGLES,
16 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 572 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 35 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 601 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 19 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 35
AMERICAN KESTRELS, 8 MERLINS and 11 PEREGRINE FALCON between September
20 and 26 (DGr, RF, GW).

State Game Lands 230 produced EASTERN SCREECH OWL, YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH,
NASHVILLE WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, OVENBIRD, COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, WILSON'S WARLBER, SCARLET TANAGER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on September 23 (AM, RK).

State Game Lands 169 yielded NASHVILLE WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA,
MAGNOLIA WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, CANADA
WARBLER, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on September 23
(AM, RK).

FRANKLIN COUNTY:
Tuscarora Summit Hawk Watch counted 17 OSPREY, 8 BALD EAGLES, 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS, 102 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 14 COOPER'S HAWKS, 3 RED-SHOULDERED
HAWKS, 121 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 15 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 12 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, 3 MERLINS and 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS between September 20 and 26
(DGe).

HUNTINGDON/CENTRE COUNTIES:
A check from the Jo Hays Vista locality at Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch
recorded on September 15 and 19 (CW).

HUNTINGDON/MIFFLIN COUNTIES:
Stone Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 7 OSPREY, 7 BALD EAGLES, 7
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 40 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 16 COOPER'S HAWKS, 219
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 7 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 10 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 2 MERLINS
and 7 PEREGRINE FALCONS between September 20 and 27 (TK, DW, NB, GGro).

LANCASTER COUNTY:
Birds seen at Kirchenwald Lutheran Church Camp near Mt. Gretna on
September 27 included 100 TURKEY VULTURES, BARRED OWL, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER
WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, NORTHERN PARULA, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER,
MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,
SWAMP SPARROWS and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS (AMB).

LEBANON COUNTY:
Second Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 36 OSPREY, 7 BALD EAGLES, 7
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 128 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 10 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 447 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 14
RED-TAILED HAWKS, 20 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 8 MERLINS and 3 PEREGRINE
FALCONS between September 20 and 26 (DS, BB, GK, RB, RP, FW).

The pond along Route 501 just south of Myerstown produced 120 KILLDEER,
2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 22 LESSER YELLOWLETS, 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 20
LEAST SANDPIPERS, 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 5
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 16 STILT SANDPIPERS, 2 WILSON'S SNIPE on
September 23 (JH, RM). There also were 65 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER at a spot another
quarter mile up the road at the next intersection on September 23 (JH,
RM, JR, RK).

A MERLIN and PHILADELPHIA VIREO were observed in the Spring Hills Acres
development on September 23 (JH, RM).

LUZERNE COUNTY:
Birds seen at Francis Slocum State Park on September 21 included GREEN
HERON, 2 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 2 PHILADELPHIA
VIREOS, RED-EYED VIREO, HOUSE WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, MAGNOLIA
WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER and
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (JD).

There were 2 BALD EAGLES, 5 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 1 RED-TAILED HAWK and
CHIMNEY SWIFTS at Tilbury Knob on September 24 (SG).

Birds seen around Kirby Park on September 24 included 2 CANADA GEESE, 2
MALLARDS, 11 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1
PEREGRINE FALCON, 5 KILLDEER, 7 ROCK PIGEONS, 2 MOURNING DOVES, 11
CHIMNEY SWIFTS, 2 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, 5 DOWNY WOODPECKERS, 2 HAIRY
WOODPECKERS, 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 1 EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, 3 RED-EYED
VIREOS, 34 BLUE JAYS, 9 AMERICAN CROWS, 1 FISH CROW, 3 TREE SWALLOWS, 18
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, 6 TUFTED TITMICE, 5 WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES,
4 CAROLINA WRENS, 3 AMERICAN ROBINS, 8 GRAY CATBIRDS, 6 EUROPEAN
STARLINGS, 2 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 1 NORTHERN PARULA, 3 BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLERS, 1 PINE WARBLER, 3 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 11 SONG SPARROWS and 8
NORTHERN CARDINALS (SG).

MIFFLIN COUNTY:
Jack's Mountain Hawk Watch reported counting 7 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 2
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 15 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 2 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, 148 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 6 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 4 AMERICAN
KESTRELS between September 21 and 22 (RS, DSm).

PERRY COUNTY:
Cove Mountain Hawk Watch reported seeing between September 15 and 18
(MJ).

SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTIES:
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary reported counting 2 BLACK VULTURES, 197 OSPREY,
16 BALD EAGLES, 43 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 367 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 67
COOPER'S HAWKS, 3 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 515 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 30
RED-TAILED HAWKS, 56 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 12 MERLINS and 18 PEREGRINE
FALCONS between September 22 and 27 (LG).

SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY:
Birds seen at Bonnie Dell Farm between September 21 and 22 included 312
CANADA GEESE, 12 MALLARDS, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, 6 MOURNING DOVES,
NORTHERN FLICKERS, 12 BLUE JAYS, 15 AMERICAN CROWS, AMERICAN ROBINS,
GRAY CATBIRDS, EUROPEAN STARLINGS and 2 CEDAR WAXWINGS (HF).

YORK COUNTY:
Highlights of a visit to Pinchot State Park on September 22 included 2
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, 2 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, 1 RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, 2 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, 9 NORTHERN PARULAS, 6 CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLERS, 37 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 8 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, 10
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 19 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 3 BAY-BREASTED
WARBLERS, 2 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, 4 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 2 AMERICAN
REDSTARTS, 3 OVENBIRDS, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS and 1 HOODED WARBLER
(RK).
