Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Vesta and Steve Myers, Doug Karalun, and Tom Benson all birded the East
Mojave on September 23 and 25. Birds reported by one or more included: a
BLACKPOLL WARBLER and a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER at Zzyzx, CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW, LEAST FLYCATCHER, TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE at China Ranch date farm.
At Crystal Spring they found the continuing WOOD THRUSH (now with an
almost full length tail), TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE, and FOX SPARROW (both the
Sooty and Thick-billed races). Halfway between Crystal and Horsethief
Spring, Tom and Doug found 2 more TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE and a GOLDEN-
CROWNED SPARROW. At Horsethief Springs, both birding groups reported
seeing a “WOODHOUSE” WESTERN SCRUB JAY fly over the road. Tom and Doug
also reported two additional RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER. Vesta and Steve also
reported a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH behind Denny’s in Baker.
Mike San Miguel sent in a report from the Crystal Springs areas on Sept.
26. He confirmed many of the birds from the earlier groups and also noted
seeing and immature AMERICAN REDSTART, TENNESSEE WARBLER, WINTER WREN, and
LEWIS’S WOODPECKER. At Zzyzx he saw an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
Lidia Seebeck sent in a correction to her report from last week. The
OSPREY and large group of WHITE-FACED IBIS she saw were near Norco, not
Pachappa Hill.
Dan Williams and Chadi Pfaff reported a BREWER’S SPARROW, a few SAGE
SPARROW and VESPER SPARROWS, as well as a few VAUX’S SWIFT at a ranch
along Rawson Rd. just west of the Shipley Reserve on Sept. 21. They also
noticed some CEDAR WAXWINGS returning to the Riverside area.
Roger Higson sent in a report from the Blythe area on Sept. 24, when he
saw a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER, and 3 ORANGE-
CROWNED WARBLERS.
Bill Sauer visited Mystic Lake on Sept. 24 and saw 16 WHITE-TAILED KITE
perched on a fence rail early in the morning. He also saw a BAIRD’S
SANDPIPER, a PRAIRIE FALCON, and AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Chet McGaugh forwarded a report of a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER being
rescued from the Coachella Canal between siphons 14 and 15 on Sept. 26. It
is not positive that this is Imperial County rather than Riverside County.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
