A SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was reported at Langdon Reservoir over the weekend.
Reid Barclay reported one bird there on Saturday, September 23, but the bird
was not there on Sunday, September 24 when Reid revisited the location. The
species has been recorded regularly at the Reservoir in the fall of recent
years. Other shorebirds observed there by Reid over the weekend included a
plover that may have been a PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER.
Reid entered the Reservoir from the north end. Other species seen there by
Reid from Friday Sept. 22 to Sunday Sept 24 included PEREGRINE FALCON,
PRAIRIE FALCON, OSPREY, SANDHILL CRANE, SHORT-EARED OWL, AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW, and PALM WARBLER. He observed a flock of 12 SNOW GEESE and also
observed at least one SWAMP SPARROW. Langdon Reservoir is just east of Hwy
797 on Hwy 22X. The north end parking lot is at the south terminus of the
first Range Road east of the town of Langdon.
John Thompson reported a SWAMP SPARROW just west of Calgary on the days of
Sunday, Sept. 24 and Monday, Sept. 25. The bird was just north and east of
the shelter in the Constructed Wetland along Hwy 8 west of Sarcee Trail on
the evening of Sept. 24; then on the morning of Sept. 25 at Griffith Woods
in nearby Discovery Ridge, John observed a HERMIT THRUSH.
The first migrating TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE of the fall migration has been
reported. Carol and Don Coulter observed a bird in their yard in the
Southview subdivision of Calgary on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 22.
The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Monday, October 2.
