This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for
Thursday September 28, 2006 with reports of GRAY KINGBIRD, BLACK-
THROATED GRAY WARBLER, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, LARK
SPARROW, and seasonal/local reports of interest.
A BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was photographed in an Oakland (Bergen
County) backyard Sep 25, but not seen since. (The news just reached
us today).
A GRAY KINGBIRD was discovered at Sandy Hook's salt pond Sep 23;
despite much searching the bird was not present the following day. A
HUDSONIAN GODWIT was found at the salt pond Sep 22. Twenty-one
species of warbler were noted at the hook that day, including a
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER at the locust grove, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
near the garden, 5 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, 3 CAPE MAY WARBLERS, and 2 BAY-
BREASTED WARBLERS. Other migrants Sep 22 were 3 BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOOS, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 2 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES, 2 LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS, and 3 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was
present Sep 22-23 around the K-lot/garden area and a GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH was found at the garden Sep 23. A juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON, CASPIAN TERN, and 56 ROYAL TERNS were found at
Spermaceti Cove Sep 25. Up to 5 juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS
were noted near the end of the fisherman's trail that day. Also
noted Sep 25-27 were juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, PHILADELPHIA
VIREO, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, AMERICAN PIPIT, TENNESSEE WARBLER, CAPE
MAY WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, and DICKCISSEL and BLUE GROSBEAK
at Gunnison lot. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is

Birds found at Island Beach State Park this week were 24 BROWN
PELICANS near Barnegat Inlet, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at Horsefoot
Cove, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW near parking area A-15.
Assunpink WMA continued to have a mixed-species warbler flock around
the pine grove near the boat launch Sep 23 including TENNESSEE
WARBLER, 4+ NORTHERN PARULAS, 3+ MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, 4+ CAPE MAY
WARBLERS, and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER.
Palmyra Cove Nature Park Sep 23 hosted PHILADELPHIA VIREO, GRAY-
CHEEKED THRUSH, and 20 species of warbler including TENNESSEE
WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER. Large numbers of
more common neotropic migrants were found there as well. Single
Connecticut and HOODED WARBLERS were found there Sep 27.
A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was noted at Mills Reservation Sep 22 near the
hawkwatch site.
A first-winter LARK SPARROW was discovered at Lincoln Park West in
Jersey City Sep 23-25, near the northwestern edge of the parking lot
closest to the golf course. Liberty State Park sightings this week
were YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and 5 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS Sep 22, MOURNING
WARBLER, 4 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 3 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS Sep 25,
VESPER SPARROW and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW Sep 27.
Celery Farm reports this week included YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 4
NASHVILLE WARBLERS and HOODED WARBLER among 13 species of warblers,
LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
Garret Mountain Reservation had 12 species of warbler this week
including 15+ BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER.
Also there were GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and LINCOLN'S
SPARROW.
