Autumn color is starting to show in the northwest, and migration is in
full swing now. Frost has avoided us so far , and gardeners are hoping
for a couple more weeks of warm weather to finish off all those
vegetables that had to be planted late.
Pat Rice reports that the Carolina Wren coming to her backyard birdbath
was still visiting on September 2nd. You can find out what its current

Kim Eckert lead a Minnesota Birding Weekend from Roseau over the Labor
Day Weekend. That group, birding in warm, windy weather found 151
species including 18 species of shorebirds ( mostly at Roseau River WMA)
and 18 species of warblers. In Lake of the Woods County, they observed
COMMON MERGANSER, COMMON LOON, COMMON TERN, and NORTHERN CARDINAL among
many others.
In Roseau County, the Eckert group reported TUNDRA SWAN, SHARP-TAILED
GROUSE, GREAT EGRET, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, MARBLED GODWIT, RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE at the Warroad wastewater treatment ponds, 12 SHORT-EARED
OWLS, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER among others.
Larry Wilebski in Kittson County saw GREAT EGRET, RED-EYED VIREO,
TENNESSEE WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, OVENBIRD, and CANADA WARBLER on
his property near Lancaster this week.
Shelley Steva saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER in Red Lake County on
September 8 about 2.5 miles east of the intersection of CR 1 and US 59.
In southern Polk County, Bruce Flaig reported many CEDAR WAXWINGS in the
town of Fertile on September 7th, and twelve TRUMPETER SWANS sunbathing
along CR 12 near Fertile. Melissa Galland saw a GREAT GRAY OWL along MN
92 near Trail in eastern Polk County on September 2nd.
Pat Rice reported from Beltrami County that she saw more than 100
BONAPARTE'S GULLS and 50-75 COMMON MERGANSERS on Lake Bemidji on August
30. She had COMMON RAVEN, AMERICAN REDSTART, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in
the county on September 2.
On September 5, Mark Otnes found a large mixed flock of warblers and
vireos at Dunton Locks County Park in Becker County . Among them were 17
species of warblers including BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED
WARBLER, and WILSON'S WARBLER.
Ben Fritchman did some birding in Clay County on September 6. At
Riverside Cemetery in north Moorhead, he found eight WILD TURKEYS,
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and PURPLE FINCH. At Gooseberry Park, he
reported YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, LEAST FLYCATCHER, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE,
EASTERN PHOEBE, RED-EYED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, PHILADELPHIA VIREO,
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, CEDAR WAXWING, and nine species
of warbler including TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, YELLOW
WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACKPOLL, AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and WILSON'S WARBLER.
