Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September
28, 2006. This report covers the period from September 22nd to September 28th
and will be updated again on October 5.
Two ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER were reported from the North End of Block Island
on the 28th. They were seen on the grounds of the last house on the east
side of Corn neck Road. Also seen on the 28th, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO and a
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER near the parking lot at the north end. Other birds seen on
Block Island this past week included: 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 1 SWAINSON'S THRUSH, 1
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, 1 WHIMBREL, 22 species of warbler with MOURNING,
ORANGE-CROWNED and CAPE MAY the highlights.
At Trustom Pond NWR on the 22nd, a KENTUCKY WARBLER and a CONNECTICUT
WARLBER were found. A WILSON'S WARBLER was found at Ninigret NWR on the 24th.
On the 24th at Walkers Farm in Barrington, 1 CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen
in the front garden area, and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW was found there on the 27th.
A DICKCISSEL and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW were recorded at Avondale Farm
Preserve in Westerly on the 28th.
Sightings from the northern end of the state on the 23rd included: at
Pulaski Park/George Washington Management Area in Glocester and Burrilliville, 1
AMERICAN KESTREL, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1 WINTER WREN, 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER, 6
BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 2 BLACKBURNIAN, 1 BAY-BREASTED, 2 CONNECTICUT WARBLER, and
a high count of 123 BLACKPOLL WARBLER. In Cumberland, at Diamond Hill
Reservoir, 1 RED-NECKED GREBE and 3 COMMON RAVEN were seen in the vicinity.
At Napatree Point in Westerly, 1 SURF SCOTER, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 25
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 5 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER on the 22nd, and a BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER was found there on the 27th.
On the 22nd at Second Beach in Middletown, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 1 BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER and 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.
At Third beach Restoration Area in Middletown, 5 WHIMBREL were seen on the
23rd, and on the 24th, 4 FOSTER'S TERN, 2 CASPIAN TERN, 2 WHIMBREL and 7
PECTORAL SANDPIPER were reported. An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was found on the 27th.
At Ninigret Pond tidal flats at the Charlestown Breachway 1 RED KNOT and a
WHIMBREL.
Finally, at Misquamicut State Beach on the 24th, 1 PARASITIC JAEGAR was
spotted.
