HIGHLIGHTS

Baird's Sandpiper, Parasitic Jaeger, Caspian Tern, Summer Tanager, Blue
Grosbeak, Dickcissel.

Word is in from Maine that the Western Reef Heron has departed, so all
you East End Birders should keep your eyes peeled for it. If found here,
it would be a first record for New York State. You could become famous!

Also those of you who are inclined to venture into the salt marsh should
be on the look out for Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow which should be
passing through the area now.

Finally Saturday promises to be a good day for migrants, so try to spend
a few hours out and about. Those household chores can wait.

At Mecox Bay, the pair of BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS continued through Sep 24,
and one was still present on Sep 27. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were spotted
on Sep 23 (AJL). Three WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were on the flat on Sep
24 (AB). Two adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were on the flat on Sep 27
(HM) and 4 there on Sep 29 (CG). On Sep 28, there were 2 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, 2 ROYAL TERNS & 1 CASPIAN TERN (CG). The CASPIAN TERN was
still present Sep 29, as were 2 FORSTER'S TERNS (CG).

A PEREGRINE FALCON was in East Quogue on Sep 28 (OB).

At least 50 BOBOLINKS were along Beach Lane in Wainscot on Sep 25 (BH).
A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was at Cedar Point on Sep 27 (JT).

At Montauk Point there were 15 COMMON EIDERS & 2 ROYAL TERNS on Sep 23
(AJL). At nearby Shagwong Point there were 1000 COMMON TERNS, 400+
LAUGHING GULLS, 60 BLACK TERNS, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS & a PEREGRINE FALCON
on Sep 23 (AJL). Along the Seal Haulout Trail there was a female SUMMER
TANAGER on Sep 22 (VB, PR). Camp Hero State Park produced an INDIGO
BUNTING and a BLUE GROSBEAK in the brush pile along the entrance road on
Sep 23 (AJL). At least 6 PEREGRINE FALCONS were spotted east of Montauk
Village on Sep 23 (AJL). Two YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS were along East
Lake Drive on Sep 27 (VB).

A DICKCISSEL was on the lawn at the Manor House at Mashomack on Sep 26
(MSch).

As of Sep 24, Jim Clinton's Wading River COMMON NIGHTHAWK count had only
reached 57 individuals, making this the poorest year for the species
since he began doing this about 5 years ago.

The Riverhead sod farms held a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on Sep 24 (AGi)

A PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted in Mattituck on Sep 23 (KGr).
