Totally unexpected last week was an UPLAND SANDPIPER along the LA River at
Willow Street on September 23 & 24. The bird has not been reported since.
A RUFF was at the Willow Street crossing from September 25 through 28. The
bird was north of Willow and south of the pipe bridge. Take Willow Street
east from the 710 Freeway, cross the river and turn left on Golden, then
left again to the river access.
One SOLITARY and two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS on the LA River between Firestone
and Clara Street on September 24. Another PECTORAL has been present all
week north of Willow Street.
A BELL'S VIREO, a rare migrant, was at DeForest Park in Long Beach on
September September 24. This bird was seen between the tennis courts and
ball fields. Also present here was a PLUMBEOUS VIREO on September 23.
>From La Crescenta, a NORTHERN PARULA was reported from Cresenta Valley Park
on Honolulu Street on September 25.
A PALM WARBLER was at Lake Balboa in Encino on September 24. The bird was
seen on the northwest side of the lake. Entrance is on the east side of
Balboa north of the 101 Freeway.
Oak Park Cemetery in Claremont hosted a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER (in the
northeast section) and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER (near the first fork in the road
after entering) on September 26. A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at the
cemetery on September 23. This bird was in the east central part of the
cemetery. The cemetery can be reached by taking Indian Hill north from the
10 Freeway and going right on Oak Park to the end.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was at Big Sycamore Canyon in Ventura County on
September 22. The bird was at the upper limit of the water near the
campground.
Both a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and a female SUMMER TANAGER were at
Camino Real Park in Ventura on September 28. Both birds were along the
small ravine on your right as you enter the park.
Two BOBOLINKS were at Revolon Slough in Ventura County on September 22. The
birds were seen downstream from Wood Road.
