Highlights

A VIRGINIA’S WARBLER was seen on Monhegan Island on September 28 and 30.
This is only the second record for VIRGINIA’S WARBLER on Monhegan and in
Maine. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, and LARK and CLAY COLORED SPARROWS were seen
on Monhegan Island.

We are still receiving scattered reports of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS
throughout much of the state.

DICKCISSELS were widely reported this week.

Two CASPIAN TERNS were seen in Acadia National Park on September 23.

On September 22, a SABINE’S GULL was seen by the Lighthouse grounds at
Quoddy Point.

York County

There was a modest flight of raptors on Mount Agamenticus on September 22. A
total of 82 birds were counted including 6 TURKEY VULTURES, 14 OSPREYS, 2
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 6 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER’S HARK, 1 NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 39 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 8 AMERICAN KESTRELS,
and 1 MERLIN. Eight hundred BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were counted flying over
Mount Agamenticus on later in the week.

A WHIP-POOR-WILL was banded at Laudholm Farm in Wells.

Birds counted on the quarterly survey of Biddeford Pool include SNOWY and
GREAT EGRETS, 28 BRANT, 14 WOOD DUCKS, AMERICAN WIGEONS, MERLIN, PEREGRINE
FALCON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RUDDY TURNSTONES, DUNLIN, SANDERLINGS, 1
BLACK-HEADED GULL, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, SAVANNAH
SPARROW, and SWAMP SPARROW.

Greater Portland and Western Maine

A DICKCISSEL was at a feeder in Yarmouth, at the Wild Bird Center.

NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS are starting to migrate, and a banding operation in
Freeport caught the first owl on September 28.

Midcoast

A COMMON NIGHTHAWK and 18 SNOW GEESE were seen in Georgetown on September 25.

The Maine Audubon trip to Monhegan Island on September 22 to September 25
recorded over 100 species, although numbers of individuals were low.
Highlights included 5-6 CAROLINA WRENS, 1 RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, 2
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS, 3 AMERICAN BITTERNS, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, several
DICKCISSELS, 1 RED-NECKED GREBE, SOOTY, MANX and GREATER SHEARWATERS, many
PEREGRINE FALCONS and MERLINS, and 20 species of warblers including 1
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and 5 CAPE MAY WARBLERS. A VIRGINIA’S WARBLER was
seen on the island on Thursday, September 28, and again on September 30.
On Miller Street in Belfast a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT perched briefly on a
fence on September 24.

Central Maine

Two PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, 2 FIELD SPARROWS, and many RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS
were seen in Rome.

In Oakland there were 15 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS on September 25.

On the exposed mudflats by Sebasticook Lake in Newport there were 16 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 14 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 10 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and a single
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER. At the dead end along the stream, across Route 7
from the County Woods Rd., there were 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, a SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Etna.

A DICKCISSEL has been coming to a feeder with house sparrows in Winterport
for several days.

Eastern Maine

At Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge there were BLUE, and GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, WOOD DUCKS, RING-NECKED DUCK, HOODED MERGANSER, 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and COMMON SNIPE.

On the annual Maine Audubon Pelagic trip out of Bar Harbor 90 participants
reported 115 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 4 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 7 MANX SHEARWATERS,
1-2 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 60 NORTHERN GANNETS, 1 GREAT CORMORANT, 4
PEREGRINE FALCONS, 2 MERLINS, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 2 RED PHALAROPE, 38
PHALAROPE SPECIES, 23 POMARINE JAEGERS, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 3
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 25 ATLANTIC PUFFINS, 5 RAZORBILLS, and 1 RUSTY
BLACKBIRD.

Two CASPIAN TERNS were seen on Great Head at Acadia National Park shortly
after the pelagic trip. The birds were also visible from Sand Beach.
A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and 4 FIELD and 4 VESPER SPARROWS were found in
Roque Bluffs.

On September 22 by the Lighthouse grounds at Quoddy Point birders recorded 1
SABINE’S GULL, 300 BLACK -LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 2 POMARINE JAEGERS, and 1
PARASITIC JAEGER. On the bog trail there were BOREAL CHICKADEES, CAPE MAY,
BLACKPOLL, MAGNOLIA, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.

Northern Maine
A single BOHEMIAN WAXWING was seen in Greenville on September 20.

A BICKNELL’S THRUSH was heard singing west of Jackman.

A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and an AMERICAN REDSTART were seen in Fort Kent
on September 23.
