In Rio Arriba County:
CL and CBr had a SORA at the wetland at the Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu on
September 27.
In Sandoval County:
MW on October 1 had a male BLACK0THROATED BLUE WARBLER at his home in
Cochiti Lake village.
In San Miguel County:
BW advises that the Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas Lake is apparently now
closed to birding. There is a new lessee there.
In Colfax County:
DC on the Maxwell Refuge reported the finding of owls at the roost on the
east side of highway A-5 is spotty. JSp saw two BARN OWLS on September 23.
DC at Stubblefield Lake near the refuge on September 25 saw 20 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES. . On September 29 there were two CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS and
16 WHITE PELICANS.
SANDHILL CRANES are arriving and he had 21 SWAINSON'S HAWKS in a field on
the Maxwell Refuge on the 1st. Also seen were a CASSIN'S VIREO and two
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS on Hwy. A2.
On September 23 DC was surprised to see 20 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Eagle
Nest (at 8400 feet!). At the Cimarron Canyon SP Tolby Campground area east
of Eagle Nest there were up to 12 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS.
There is now a gas station in Maxwell.
In Union County:
CR, BN, and MH on September 30 at Clayton Lake SP saw two EASTERN PHOEBES, a
NASHVILLE WARBLER, a FIELD SPARROW, and a late YELLOW WARBLER. In Clayton
there were three WHITE-WINGED DOVES.
On the road to Wetherly Lake there was four SANDHILL CRANES and
CHESTNUT-COLLARED AND MCCOWN'S LONGSPURS with two WESTERN GREBES on the lake.
In Bernalillo County:
DP had up to 12 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS (with immatures) south of the Montaņo
Bridge on the east side of the Rio Grande on September 17.
On September 22 DP saw two male EASTERN BLUEBIRDS on the Bosque Trail of the
Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque.
In Valencia County:
DBa on September 22 saw four LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS along the Peralta Drainage
Ditch near Belen. Two more were seen again on September 23.
DH at the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen on September 21 saw an amazing
156 CATTLE EGRETS.
In Torrance County:
JO on September 27 had a SANDERLING at the salt flats north on Encino.
In Guadalupe County:
BW on September 18 at the Pecos River bridge in Santa Rosa saw two CARDINALS
and an INCA DOVE.
In DeBaca County:
JO on September 27 had a young male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at the northeast
corner of Yeso on NM 60. On September 29 it was seen by JP, WW, and LL.
At Sumner Lake on September 30 JP and WW saw a CASPIAN TERN.
At Bosque Redondo Park near Fort Sumner on September 23 JP +and WW had a
WOOD DUCK and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose on September 23 JP and WW found
a LONG-EARED OWL. On September 30 they saw a male NORTHERN PARULA and a
female AMERICAN REDSTART. DBa on September 28 reported the Parula, owl, two or
three possible HERMIT WARBLERS, and several TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS. MB and NP
on October 1 saw the Parula, the owl, and a BROWN THRASHER.
GK had a BROAD-WINGED HAWK flying over downtown Portales on September 30.
DBa saw a PECTORAL SANDPIPER at the Portales Sewage Ponds on September 27.
In Chaves County:
DBa reported an AMERICAN BITTERN on Bitter Lake Refuge on September 30.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio DH on September 24 saw four
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on the refuge, and said up to 20 were reported on the log.
He also found two male VERMILION FLYCATCHERS.
At Water Canyon in the Magdalena Mts. west of Socorro on September 23 CL and
CCB found a CASSIN'S VIREO and TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. The old campground is
gone and the new one is nearing completion, with the road up to the Langmuir
Lab is open only on weekends.
CR and SD had a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER at the Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus
in Socorro on September 23. DBa found many JUNIPER TITMOUSE at the park and
on the golf course October 1.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park on September 23 CR and SD saw only an AMERICAN
REDSTART. Near the Caballo dam there was a CASSIN'S VIREO.
At Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant Butte Dam there was for CR and SD
another Cassin's vireo. At South Monticello Point on the lake there were 175
WHITE PELICANS and close to 500 WESTERN and CLARK'S GREBES. Some were still
sitting on nests.
In Catron County:
Between Datil and Reserve on September 18 in trees EW saw a small flock of
RED CROSSBILLS.
In Grant County:
PT and TM on September 27 in the Pinos Altos Mts. in the Signal Peak area
heard a SPOTTED OWL and PYGMY OWL and reported a male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER,
and a SLATE-COLORED JUNCO.
EW and MF along the Gila Rio near Cliff say SANDHILL CRANES were returning
by September 20.
EL had an OSPREY at the Tyrone Sewage Ponds September 17/
DG on September 28-29 made another foray into the Big Burro Mts. near Silver
City and found a GOSHAWK, a FLAMMULAED OWL, RED CROSSBILLS, a few
YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS on top with two fledglings, and a male TOWNSEND'S WARBLER.
In Hidalgo County:
CL on October 1 had
At the Lordsburg Sewage Ponds on September 22 JO saw five WHITE PELICANS.
At the playas west of Lordsburg at the Animas exit of I-10 on September 25
there were four WHITE-FRONTED GEESE.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
CL had 85 DOWITCHERS on the playa at the Anima exit of I-10 west of
Lordsburg on October 1.
On September 30 he had a BELTED KINGFISHER south of the Gray Ranch
headquarters.
In Clanton Canyon on September 30-October 1 CL had PYGMY, ELF, WHISKERED
SCREECH OWLS, WHIP-POOR-WILL, and POORWILL. A BELTED Kingfisher was still at
the dam, and three female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS were at feeders that have been
placed there. He also saw two male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS.
CL on on September 30 had a BLUE-HEADED Vireo in Pecan Park in Deming. In
Pancho Villa SP near Columbus there were many warblers.
At the Katfish Kove near the Grant Co. line LM had a SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, a
GREEN HERON, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on September 20. There were
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS in Deming on September 23.
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.
In Doņa Ana County:
CL at the Sunland Park racetrack near Santa Teresa on September 29 saw a
CATTLE EGRET, two SNOWY EGRETS, six WHITE-FACED IBIS, two SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,
a MARBLED GODWIT, and two LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS with other shorebirds.
JN on September 26 at the Bosque Valley Park (Old Refuge) south of Mesilla
again saw the female BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD.
JO saw BLUE-WINGED TEAL at a pond in the Uvas Valley on NM 26 west of Hatch
on September 25.
JN found water in Isaack Lake northeast of Las Cruces.
In Otero County:
DG on September 19 had migrants on Otero Mesa including a DICKCISSEL. On
September 20 there were CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and a BAIRD'S SPARROW.
AT Bluff Spring in the Sacrmento Mts. on September 21 JO saw TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER and two RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo JO on September 21 had one RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE. The "no access" signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is
open to birding. A board has been installed for birders to list their
sightings.
In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs near Whites City SW on September 10 aw again the
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flying along the stream. On September 19 JBu again saw the
hawj, which he identified as the elegans subspecies. JB saw the hawk in a
dead cottonwood near the entrance on September 22. JS on September 24 and 25
missed the hawk; MB and NP missed it on October 1, but DBa saw it on
September 26..
JB also had at Brantley Lake on September 22 a first winter LAUGHING GULL.
JS on September 24 saw a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and an OSPREY.
SW forwarded a report that EP had a female BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD at his
Carlasbad feeder on
September 28.
In Lea County:
MB and NP on October 1 at the Tatum Sewage Ponds saw a first fall MAGNOLIA
WARBLER.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On October 5 the trip is to the Manzano Hawkwatch Site led by Bonnie
Long. On OCtober 12 they to to the Alameda Open Space with Lannois Neely, on
October 19 to She Shining River Bosque Open Space with Sylvia Fine, and On
October 26 for a hike on the Embudito Trail with Nancy Phillips.
Southwestern Audubon on October 6 and 7 with have a symposium on the WNMU
campus in Silver City on the Natural History of the Gila River. There will be
Field trips, including birds of the Gila with Roland Shook.
On Sunday, October 8 Sangre de Cristo Audubon visits the Manzano HawkWatch
site. Call Gary and Carol Johnson at 466-1303.
On Saturday, October 21 Southwestern Audubon will bird in the Black Range to
Lower Gallinas Campground over to Emory Pass.
On Saturday, October 28, Central Audubon will bird at the Bosque del Apache
Refuge. Contact is Bob Merkel at 838-2296.
Also on October 28 Mesilla Valley Audubon will go to the Rio Bosque Park in
El Paso. Call Walt Whitford at 521-1358.
The Festival of Cranes at Socorro this year will be November 14-19. Central
