This is the Monday, October 2, 2006 Missouri Rare Bird Alert, a
statewide service of the Audubon Society of Missouri, serving the
birding community of Missouri since 1901. The bird alert is compiled
from reports submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as rare, casual,
or accidental on the 2003 Annotated Checklist of Missouri Birds (with
revisions in 2004 and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or “accidental”.

ST. LOUIS AREA
At Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary (St. Charles Co.), Josh Uffman
found one NELSON’S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW on the backside of Heron Pond
Monday, Oct. 2. As many as 28 AMERICAN AVOCETS were observed by a
number of birders at Riverlands on Saturday, Sept. 30. Two immature
LAUGHING GULLS were reported by Charlene Malone at Riverlands on
Friday, Sept. 29.
On Friday, Sept. 29, Jim Hickner found a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER at Tower Grove Park (St. Louis City). This bird was observed
throughout the weekend. The warbler was reported throughout the day
on Monday, Oct. 2.
One NELSON’S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was spotted by Shawn Clubb at
Little Creve Couer Marsh (St. Louis Co.) on Saturday, Sept. 30. On
Thursday, Sept. 28, Joe Eades reported one EARED GREBE at Creve Coeur
Lake.
A single CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was observed by David Rogles at the
Blue Grosbeak Trail at Weldon Spring CA (St. Charles Co.) on Friday,
Sept. 29.
At Castlewood SP (St. Louis Co.) on Tuesday, Sept. 26, Mike Brady
observed one PEREGRINE FALCON while watching a stream of 400-500
migrating raptors overhead.
SOUTHEAST
At Ten Mile Pond CA (Mississippi Co.), Bill Eddleman found one
PEREGRINE FALCON on Monday, Oct. 2.
SOUTHWEST
On Sunday, Oct. 1, a large group of birders observed 7 AMERICAN
AVOCETS and one SANDERLING at Schell-Osage CA (Vernon Co.), reported
Dean Rising.
KANSAS CITY AREA
On Friday, Sept. 29, a flock of 24 AMERICAN AVOCETS were seen by
Kristi Mayo at Smithville Lake (Clay Co.). An immature SABINE’S GULL,
possibly the same one present since at least Sept. 18, was observed
by Bob Fisher on Monday, Sept. 25.
On Tuesday, Sept. 26, Ruth Simmons passed along word that a WESTERN
GREBE had been seen at Weatherby Lake (Platte Co.). This (very
early!) bird was subsequently relocated by a number of birders, with
the last report coming on Thursday, Sept. 28.
NORTHWEST
On Friday, Sept. 22, Tommie Rogers reported one NORTHERN GOSHAWK at
Squaw Creek NWR (Holt Co.)
NORTHEAST
On Saturday, Sept. 23, Josh Uffman found one SABINE’S GULL at Thomas
Hill Reservoir (Macon/Randolph Co.). The next day, a number of
birders counted as many as three immature SABINE’S GULLS at the lake.
On Monday, Sept. 25, Dianne and Steve Kinder had looks at one adult
SABINE’S GULL. Also at Thomas Hill, on Sunday, Sept. 24, Edge Wade
reported 50 LEAST TERNS swirling over the lake.
On Sunday, Sept. 24, Patrick Harrison observed one IBIS SP. in flight
over Hunnewell CA (Monroe Co.).
At Fountain Grove CA (Linn/Livingston Co.), Steve Kinder reported one
MERLIN at the Bittern Marsh pool on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
