Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Monday October 2 at 11am. To report a bird sighting, call

The first TUNDRA SWANS of the Fall season have been reported in the Calgary
area. Terry Korolyk observed four adult birds at 80Avenue and 36 Street NE
in the city on October 1.
Large numbers of GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reported in the Irricana
Sloughs. Simone Marler observed aprx 500 at Railway Slough on September 30,
and on the following day Terry K saw 200 (including 3 orange-billed
juveniles) at Cattleland Feedlot north of the intersection of Hwys 564 and
817 north of Strathmore. Railway Slough is on the north side of Twp Rd 270
just west of the Rge Rd 254 junction.
Terry K observed 7 SURF SCOTERS in the west end of Glenmore Reservoir on
September 29. A pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYES was also present. On September
30 Al Borgardt and the CFNS birding group saw 5 Surf Scoters on the
reservoir.
Shorebird reports from Langdon Reservoir on September 30 included 2 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS seen by Andrew Slater and Bill Wilson. They also found 25
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 550 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 300 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
100 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 150 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 1
STILT SANDPIPER, a PRAIRIE FALCON and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.
Terry K saw a flock of aprx 100 COMMON GRACKLES near Anderson Road and
Acadia Drive on Sep 30. Joyce and Don Moore reported a STELLER'S JAY near
the Smith-Dorrien Hwy in Kananaskis Country last last week.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert will be Thursday October 5.
BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the first Wednesday of the month, September - May
at 7:30 pm, Room 211, BioSciences Building, University of Calgary. The next
meeting will be on Wednesday October 4. Richard Knapton will speak on
"Birding in Borneo." Doors open at 7:00 pm.
