WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Massachusetts Voice of Audubon for Monday October 2, 2006
In the east and west meadows of Northampton there were 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, 25
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 15 AMERICAN PIPITS, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, a VESPER SPARROW,
and 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
In Hadley there were 2 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS,
and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER.
Noted in Hardwick were 20 BLACKPOLL, a BLACKBURNIAN, and 2 CONNECTICUT WARBLERS
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was reported in Belchertown, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was
seen in Sunderland, and 4 AMERICAN WIGEON and a GADWALL were in Turners Falls.
Seen on a tour around the Quabbin Reservoir were 12 HOODED MERGANSERS, a
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a MERLIN, a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 2 CAPE MAY WARBLERS and a
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER.
Seen in south and west Quabbin were 5 COMMON LOONS, an AMERICAN WOODCOCK, a
SWAINSON’S THRUSH, and a WILSON’S WARBLER.
Two AMERICAN WIGEON and a GREAT EGRET were reported in Longmeadow, an AMERICAN
WIGEON was seen in Agawam, and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in
Granville.
Observed in Northfield were an AMERICAN BITTERN, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, an AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVER, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS, a MERLIN, 2 PHILADELPHIA
VIREOS, 57 AMERICAN PIPITS, a CONNECTICUT WARBLER, a TENNESSEE WARBLER, and 6 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS.
Hawkwatch totals at three sites this week totaled 72 OSPREYS, 9 BALD EAGLES, 11
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 83 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1,456 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 51 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, 6 MERLINS, and 6 PEREGRINE FALCONS.
