This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species

At Mad River County Park a RED-EYED VIREO was seen in the main patch and a
PECTORAL SANDPIPER was on the gravel bar (Ken Irwin).
20 Sept.

At the Orick Dump were a WILLOW FLYCATCHER and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER. At the
"Oxbow" area of Redwood creek were 8 WOOD DUCK and 3 HOODED MERGANSER (Ken
Irwin).
21 Sept.

In SISKIYOU COUNTY a NORTHERN GOSHAWK on the Fort Goss Trail, off of Highway
96, east of Happy Camp (Susan Nolan).
A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was in the willows south of Vigo Street at the Eureka
Marsh. A YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER was in the town of Fairhaven on the North
Spit (Tom Leskiw).
In the Orick area an AMERICAN BITTERN was at the end of Hufford Road. A
RED-EYED VIREO, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, WILLOW FLYCATCHER,
AND A well-described LEAST FLYCATCHER were present (Ken Irwin).
22 Sept.
-----------
A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was found off of the fishing pier at the end of Del
Norte Street in Eureka (Joe Sariani). The bird was seen later in the morning
by other observers (Daryl Coldren).
A BRANT was seen with a flock of Western Canada Geese in the Arcata Bottoms
at the corner of Pacheco and Samoa Avenue (Brian Accord).
A MERLIN was seen along the Highway 101 corridor between Eureka and Arcata,
just before the Bracut section (Chet Ogan).
A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen at Crab Park, near the mouth of the Eel
River Estuary (Tom Leskiw).
A WILLOW FLYCATCHER and BLACKPOLL WARBLER were seen at the Orick Dump. A
SWAMP SPARROW was seen at the Redwood Creek Oxbow (Ken Irwin).
A SAGE THRASHER was found at the Eel River Wildlife Area (Ocean Ranch Unit);
the bird was found at the eastern-most parking lot (Lucas Bruigi).
A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was found on Vaisade Road, west of Pacheco
Avenue in the Arcata Bottoms. A MERLIN, PEREGRINE FALCON and other raptors
wer present on the V-street Loop (Brian Accord).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY a juvenile RUFF, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and 8 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS were found at the Alexander Dairy. At Teal Point, on Lake Earl, a
SABINE'S GULL and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK were present (Daryl Coldren et al.).
23 Sept.

On Scenic Drive, in Trinidad, 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS were present at
Luffenholtz Point. Also of interest were a pair of CALIFORNIA QUAIL with 2
very young precocial chicks behind Merriams in Trinidad (John Hunter).
At the east end of the V-Street Loop were 7 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and a SWAMP
SPARROW. A SAY'S PHOEBE was in the prairie north of the Samoa Bridge (Ken
Irwin).
A TENNESSEE WARBLER was seen briefly at the the first bend of Mad River
Road, along the Mad River (Daryl Coldren).
On Seidel Road, in the Arcata Bottoms, a PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER was found in
a plowed field. Also of interest there were 10-15 AMERICAN PIPITS and 1
WESTERN MEADOWLARK. At Shay Park, in Arcata, there were 1WILLOW FLYCATCHER,
2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 5 FOX SPARROWS, 5 GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 1
AUDUBON'S WARBLER (Scott Carey).
23 Sept.

At the south end of Fields Landing there were 2 RED KNOTS in the high tide
roost (Brian Acord).
24 Sept.

At Mad River County Park there was a MAGNOLIA WARBLER in the main willow
patch (Brian Accord and Scott Carey).
On the gravel bar there was one PECTORAL SANDPIPER. At the intersection of
Parton and Miller roads, in the Arcata Bottoms, was a BURROWING OWL (Brian
Acord).
On View Street, in Trinidad, a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was found with other
warblers. Also in Trinidad were a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and WHITE-THROATED
SPARROWS with other sparrows on Underwood Street. Three WHITE-THROATED
SWIFTS were seen with over 200 Vaux's Swifts of Trinidad State Beach Bluffs.
Over 2,000 BROWN PELICANS that were wintering around Trinidad Bay left on
the 19th (Melodie Hamilton).
At Patrick's Point State Park a BLACKPOLL WARBLER and AMERICAN REDSTART were
near the Mussel Rock parking lot. A PLUMBEOUS VIREO was found along the road
that goes down to Agate Beach (John Hunter).
At the Orick Dump a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, a female
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, A PRAIRIE WARBLER, and a possible SUMMER
TANAGER were seen. On Crannel Road, east of Clam Beach, were 4 WILLOW
FLYCATCHERS and 1 RED-EYED VIREO (Ken Irwin).
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and WILLOW FLYCATCHER were at Shay Park. On the
lower Mad River 2 DUNLIN were seen (Scott Carey).
25 Sept.
------------
At the Eel River Wildlife area 2 PALM WARBLERS were found. A PEREGRINE
FALCON and 12 LESSER YELLOWLEGS was seen on Cock Robin Island. Of mammal
interest were 2 BLUE WHALES scoped off of Table Bluff (Tom Leskiw).
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was at the Orick Dump (Ken Irwin).
An observer's first RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was at the Eureka Marsh (Tom
Leskiw).
A report came in from DEL NORTE COUNTY. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was at the
end of Pala Road. At Teal Point, of Lake Earl, were 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS,
PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER and 1 AMERICAN AVOCET. At the mouth of Lake Talawa
were 5 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS (Lucas Bruigi).
A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was at the Elk River Wildlife Area (Tom Leskiw).
The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was refound at Shay Park in Arcata (Daryl
Coldren).
Of mammal interest there were 75-100 Pilot Whales on outer Trinidad Bay
(Melodie Hamilton).
26 Sept.
------------
A PALM and BLACKPOLL WARBLER were found at the base of Bald Hills Road,
north of Orick (David Fix).
A RUFF was found just west of Klopp Lake in the p.m. of the day (Steve
Tucker).
Inland along Forest Service Route 1 a SAY'S PHOEBE was found south of Grouse
Mountain. A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was south of Horse Mountain by Pilot Rock.
Two flocks (75 birds each) of BAND-TAILED PIGEONS were seen around Pilot
Rock (Tom Leskiw).
At the Elk River Wildlife Area a RED-EYED VIREO, a CASSIN'S VIREO, a
TENNESSEE WARBLER and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER were found (Tom Leskiw).
A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was found at Mad River County Park (Ken Irwin).
The LITTLE BLUE HERON was still present behind the Ship Ashore Restaurant
(Alan Barron).
In Eureka, 36 ALEUTIAN CACKLING GEESE were seen flying over Henderson Center
(Michael Morris).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY a SAY'S PHOEBE was at Cadre Point of Lake Earl. At the
extreme north end of Lake Earl were 2 COMMON MOORHENS and a WESTERN TANAGER.
An adult female CAPE-WAY WARBLER was with a mixed flock in the Pacific
Shores Subdivision on the north side of Lake Earl. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
and RED-SHOULDERED HAWK were at Teal Point of Lake Earl (Sean McAllister).
27 Sept.
------------
A RED-EYED VIREO and HERMIT WARBLER were at the Elk River Wildlife Area (Tom
Leskiw).
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was found along the trail at Elk Head, north of
Trinidad (Michael Morris).
Another report came from DEL NORTE COUNTY. The highlight was a RED-THROATED
PIPIT heard amongst a flock of American Pipits on the south side of the
"Narrows" at Lake Earl. Also in the flock were 4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. On Lake
Earl were 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. The SAY'S PHOEBE was still present
at Cadre Point. On Lakeview Street a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen a couple
of houses before the boat ramp. Also present around Lak Earl were a
PEREGRINE FALCON and a MERLIN (Ron LeValley).
A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was at Elk River Wildlife Area. A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
and MERLIN were seen behind the Bayshore Mall in Eureka (Tom Leskiw).
At Mad River County Park a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and MAGNOLIA WARBLER were
found (Stan Harris).
Down in the Shelter Cove area a CAPE-MAY WARBLER was found at the mouth of
Humboldt Creek. Two LARK SPARROWS were at the 8th hole of the golf course
(Adam Brown via NW Calbird).
28 Sept.
------------
In the late morning at Elk River Esturay a small rail fitting the
description of a YELLOW RAIL was seen flying above the cordgrass (Tom
Leskiw).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY the LITTLE BLUE HERON was still present at it's usual
location. A FERRUGINOUS HAWK was seen at Tryon Ranch. Two HORNED LARKS and 2
LAPLAND LONGSPURS were at the mouth of Lake Talawa. Sixteen EURASIAN
COLLARED-DOVES were found in the town of Smith River (Alan Barron).
A BLACKPOLL WARLBER was seen in the willows behind the old Tala Works
building off of Herrick Avenue at the south end of Eureka. In the plowed
field between Herrick Avenue and Humboldt Hill Road were 2 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (Sean McAllister).
On the 27th and the 28th there was a WILLOW FLYCATCHER in the Rainbow Lane
Willows, in Trinidad.
29 Sept.

A MAGNOLIA WARBLER was found in the cypress grove at the end of the North
Spit (Larry Maren ?).
A BLUE-HEADED VIREO* was found at the Orick Dump (Ken Irwin).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY a RED-THROATED PIPIT was found at the mouth of Lake
Talawa, possibly the same one found a couple of days earlier (Lucas Bruigi).
30 Sept.
------------
About 85 ALEUTIAN CACKLING GEESE were seen flying over McKinleyville. Two
juvenile GREAT-HORNED OWLS were at Hiller Park in McKinleyville (Kerry
Ross).
In the new salt marsh that is being developed west of the Arcata Marsh,
there were a LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER. This area can be
seen by walking on the now open levee that you can reach by walking from the
2nd major bend in I Street (Elias Elias).
The MAGNOLIA WARBLER was still present at the Cypress patch at the end of
the North Spit. At Mad River County Park there were 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLERS found on the main trail (Brian Acord).
A male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was found at the Orick Dump and the
BLUE-HEADED VIREO was still present (Ken Irwin).
At Mad River County Park there were still a CHESTNUT-SIDED and MAGNOLIA
WARBLER (Daryl Coldren).
