Reports summarized this week are from San Bernardino, Riverside and
Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Several people birding Glen Helen Regional Park on Oct. 1 found a
continuing male SUMMER TANAGER and RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER. There were also
lots of sparrows, including VESPER, and BREWER’S, as well as what appeared
to be a LADDER-BACKED WOODPECKER.

Bill Deppe reported a male PROTHONOTARY WARBLER flying across his driveway
in Apple Valley on Sept. 30.

Sandy Remley walked the trail to Bluff Lake on Sept. 29 and found a GOLDEN-
CROWNED KINGLET, and a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER.

Pete Robertshaw reported seeing nine AMERICAN AVOCET flying repeatedly
around Lake Gregory on Sept. 28. He also noted 2 OSPREY and 2 CASPIAN
TERNS.

A pair of birders spent Oct. 3 in the East Mojave. They reported a
SOLITARY SANDPIPER at the Tecopa sewer ponds, and updated the sighting of
the WOOD THRUSH at Crystal Springs. Two RED-NAPED SAPSUCKERS and a
TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE were also there. At Beck Spring, they found 5
TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE, and noted that many CHUKAR were present on the road
and hillsides near the spring. At Horsethief Spring they sighted a
BLACKPOLL WARBLER, and OVENBIRD, 3 more RED-NAPED SAPSUCKERS, and 3 more
TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRES. Baker produced a VESPER SPARROW, and Zzyzx Spring
produced a LEWIS’S WOODPECKER, a TENNESSEE WARBLER, and a bright male
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. The warbler was in the mesquites at the water seep
along the nature trail 200 yards west of the old bath house.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Madeline Bauer reported she continues to see large flocks—multiple groups
of 5 to 50- WHITE-FACED IBIS in the vicinity of Hidden Valley Wildlife
area.

Three people spotted a BLACKPOLL WARBLER at San Jacinto Wildlife Area on
Oct. 1. The bird was along the trail between ponds B and C.

Chet McGaugh birded the San Jacinto Wildlife area on Oct. 1. He found a
HORNED GREBE in the first watered area after the left turn towards the
ponds. At Mystic Lake he saw a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, a DUNLIN, and many
WESTERN and LEAST SANDPIPERS. There were twenty or more WHITE-TAILED KITE
on the metal fences, and he also saw two ROSS’S GEESE at the Riverside
national Cemetery.

Roger Higson reported from the Blythe area on Oct. 1. He spotted 2 SHARP-
SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER’S HAWK, 2 NORTHERN HARRIER, 1 WHITE-TAILED KITE, 3
OSPREY, 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 1 FERRUGINOUS HAWK, 1 MERLIN, 1 PEREGRINE
FALCON, and 2 PRAIRIE FALCON. He also spotted a SHORT-EARED OWL, as well
as numerous EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES.

Chet McGaugh birded Desert Center on Sept. 30, where he found a hatch year
PAINTED BUNTING, a BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 3 GRAY FLYCATCHERS, a SOLITARY
SANDPIPER, a PRAIRIE FALCON, and 3 SONG SPARROWS. At the Whitewater River
Delta he found LAUGHING GULL, a WESTERN GULL, and a BLACK SKIMMER.

Doug Karalun sent in a continuing report on the male HOODED WARBLER on the
marsh trail at Big Morongo Canyon on Oct. 1.

Paul Jorgenson sent in a report of an all red male SUMMER TANAGER in the
Palm Springs area know as “The Vines”. The area is just below the tram.

Tom Benson forwarded a report from the Morongo Preserve on Sept. 29, where
he found a GRAY CATBIRD on the Marsh Trail, and a male and female HOODED
WARBLER along the wet areas of the Marsh Trail. He was also told that a
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK has been coming to the feeders at the preserve.

Dan Williams sent in a late report from Sept. 26 from the Estelle
Mountain/Temescal Wash area off Park Canyon Road in Corona. He spotted a
GRAY VIREO there. The following day he spotted a PEREGRINE FALCON at
Mystic Lake, and noticed at least two dozen VAUX’S SWIFTS heading south.

Tom Benson reported again from Kelso Depot on Oct. 1, where he found a
BLACKPOLL WARBLER. Other highlights included a dark MERLIN, 2 LAWRENCE’S
GOLDFINCH. At the 29 Palms Inn, he ntoed he had seen a YELLOW-BREASTED
CHAT on Sept. 29. Luckie Park had a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER, and there was a
SORA walking around on the grass. A REDHEAD, RING-NECKED DUCK, and a WOOD
DUCK were on the pond with the fountain.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

Guy McCaskie sent in a report after birding with a WINGS group on three
days last week. Highlights included: 3 BLUE-FOOTED BOOBY on Mullet Island,
a hatch year TRICOLORED HERON at the west end of Pound Rd., 10 RUDDY
TURNSTONE at the north end of Garst, 4 immature PARASITIC JAEGER off the
mouth of the Alamo River and Red Hill, 1 LONG-TAILED JAEGER off the mouth
of the Alamo River, 1 FRANKLIN’S GULL near the southern end of the Wister
Unit, and 14 hatch year birds near Obsidian Butte, 1 COMMON TERN at
Obsidian Butte, 1 GRAY FLYCATCHER at Cattle Call Park, 1 TROPICAL KINGBIRD
near Fig Lagoon, 1 AMERICAN REDSTART at the entrance to Finney Lake, and 1
adult male TRICOLORED BLACKBIRD at Kuhn’s Dairy. The group also saw a
NORTHERN FLICKER in Niland, and a VERMILION FLYCATCHER near Fig Lagoon.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
