This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday October 5, 2006 with reports of TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, SEDGE
WREN, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW,
and seasonal/local reports of interest.
A TOWNSEND'S WARBLER was discovered at Brigantine NWR around noon Oct
5. The bird was seen at the beginning of Jen's Trail, accessed from
the north dike at the start of the upland/wetland interface. Also at
Brig Oct 3 were HUDSONIAN GODWIT and MARBLED GODWIT. A COMMON
MOORHEN was by the gull pond tower Oct 4.
Sandy Hook sightings this week included AMERICAN BITTERNS at
Horseshoe Cove Sep 30 and Spermaceti Cove Oct 1, 2-3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-
PLOVERS at north beach Sep 30-Oct 1, a juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT
HERON, 3 CASPIAN TERNS, and 35+ ROYAL TERNS at Spermaceti Cove Oct 1,
and 12 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, and BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO
at the salt pond Oct 1. Passerine migration was good all week,
including a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER at the locust grove, GRAY-
CHEEKED THRUSH, and 23 species of warbler recorded including
TENNESSEE WARBLER, AN ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at K-lot, CAPE MAY
WARBLERS, BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS, and 2 HOODED WARBLERS. Up to 2 CLAY-
COLORED SPARROWS were present in and around the k-lot field Sep 30-
Oct 3. Another CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in the field south of
Gunnison Rd Oct 1. A VESPER SPARROW was found at the east end of k-
lot Oct 2 and single LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were found this week as
well. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at

Palmyra Cove Nature Park had an excellent flight Sep 30 including a
flyover AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, 25+ SWAINSON'S
THRUSHES, 6+ GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES, 5 WOOD THRUSHES, 18 species of
warbler including many TENNESSEE WARBLERS, NASHVILLE WARBLERS, BLACK-
THROATED BLUE WARBLERS, and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS. Also
there were at least 3 CAPE MAY WARBLERS, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER,
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and several CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS.
The Warren Township Green Acres site, or "Glenhurst Meadows" as the
town has named it, hosted CONNECTICUT WARBLER and 7 LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS Oct 2. The site is located adjacent to the Wagner Arboretum
on Mountain Ave, Warren Twp (DeLorme P 31, N-16). Waterproof
footwear is recommended.
Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury hosted large numbers of sparrows Oct
2 including 50+ SAVANNAH SPARROW, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 4 WHITE-
CROWNED SPARROWS.
An adult CASPIAN TERN was viewed at Merrill Creek Reservoir Sep 30.
Jersey City reports this week included WILSON'S WARBLER, GRASSHOPPER
SPARROW, 70 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 4 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 4
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS at Liberty State Park Sep 30. Several AMERICAN
PIPITS were flyovers and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR was studied east of the
playground along the riverfront walkway at Liberty State Park Oct 3.
Single NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were there Oct 4-5. At Lincoln
Park West YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, 2 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 2
SWAINSON'S THRUSHES, TENNESSEE WARBLER, and NASHVILLE WARBLER were
noted among many migrants there Sep 30.
A SEDGE WREN was discovered at the Allendale Celery Farm in Bergen
County Oct 3-4 between the butterfly garden and the pipe at "no-name
culvert." Also there this week were TENNESSEE WARBLER, LINCOLN'S
SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
In Salem County at Mannington Marsh 22 LITTLE BLUE HERONS and COMMON
MOORHEN were noted Oct 2. Over 30 CATTLE EGRETS were found north of
the marsh along Rte 45 that day.
5 BROWN PELICANS were noted off the end of Great Bay Blvd in
Tuckerton Sep 29.
