Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for October 5,
2006. This report covers the period from September 29th to October 5th and
will be updated again on October 12th.
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island held it's annual Block Island birding
weekend on the 30th and the 1st. Highlights from the weekend plus sightings
during the week include: 1 GYRFALCON (on the 5th) 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER (at
the airport), 1 SORA, 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 1 COMMON MERGANSER, 1
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN,1 RED-TAILED HAWK, (unusual on the
island) 6 PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, 4 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 5
RUSTY BLACKBIRD, 1 COMMON NIGHTHAWK, 1 DICKCISSEL, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 1
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 3 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, 1 CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW (in the garden at the Spring House Hotel) and 1 NELSON'S
SHARP-TAILED SPARROW. Warblers included: 1 TENNESSEE, 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, 1
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 2 NASHVILLE WARBLER, 4 NORTHERN PARULA, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 1
MAGNOLIA, 4 CAPE MAY, 555 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 70 PALM WARBLER, 22
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 5 BLACK-THROATED GREEN, 10 PINE, 1 BLACKBURNIAN, 1
BAY-BREASTED, 20 BLACKPOLL, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER and 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.
At Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly on the 1st, BLUE GROSBEAK, 1
DICKCISSEL and 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. On the 3rd, 1 BLUE GROSBEAK, 4 INDIGO
BUNTING, 1 PURPLE FINCH, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARRROW, 4 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and 3
AMERICAN KESTREL.
On the 30th at Napatree Point in Westerly, 3 INDIGO BUNTING, 1 LINCOLN'S
SPARROW, 1 DICKCISSEL and 1 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW.
At Third Beach restoration area in Middletown, 1 MERLIN, 1 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER and 1 WHIMBREL on the 30th, and on the 5th, 1 PECTORAL SANPIPER was
seen.
On the 30th, at Trustom Pond NWR, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELER were found.
At the flats at Ninigret Pond at the Charlestown Breachway on the 29th, 9
CASPIAN TERN were discovered, and 2 lingered there until the 4th.
At Ninigret NWR, 1 adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON and 1
SWAINSON'S THRUSH.
Finally, at the southeast side of the mud hole, approximately 22 miles south
of Point Judith a LITTLE GULL was described near a lobster boat with many
other common gull species.
The total species count through the end of April is 306. (Thanks to Dave
