HIGHLIGHTS
Bald Eagle, Orange-crowned Warbler, Lark Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow
Migration has been slow and steady with a few good days in the last
week. MYRTLE WARBLERS finally made a strong showing on Oct 2. Both
species of KINGLETS are also now being reported from all corners. Many
sparrows have been appearing, and there is still a fair diversity of
warblers and vireos. The next two weeks should be prime sparrow time,
although it looks like this weekend any chance of good migration will be
quashed by the strange weather event that will bring us strong northeast
winds. Perhaps a trip to Montauk Point to look for Jaegers is in order.
A Gyrfalcon was reported from Block Island today (Oct 5), so take a
close look at any large falcon that you might see.
It seems that several e-mails did not get through to me this week. If
you sent me an e-mail and your name is not listed at the end of this
issue of East End Birds, it means I did not receive your e-mail. Please
re-send them and I will include the reports in next week's issue.
A LARK SPARROW was found on Oct 5 in the northeast corner of the
ocean-side parking lot at Tiana Beach, which is along Dune Rd at
Shinnecock Bay (ES). More than 100 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were seen
from the end of Little Neck Rd (across from Southampton College) in
Southampton on Oct 1 (KG).
At Cupsogue County Park there was a PEREGRINE FALCON and an AMERICAN
BITTERN on Oct 1 (KN).
A PEREGRINE FALCON and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW were spotted at Quail
Hill Farm in Amagansett on Oct 3 (HM).
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO were at Outer Beach Park
along East Lake Drive in Montauk on Oct 4 (VB). An immature BALD EAGLE
was spotted in Teddy Roosevelt County Park over the hill with the poles
on Oct 5 (VB).
In the scrub along the southeast side of the Shelter Island Dump the
first ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER of the season was spotted on Sep 30 (HM,
OB, NH).
Three COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in Wading River on Oct 5 (JC), which
brings the season's total to 106 individuals (JC).
This week I received reports from Orhan Birol, Vicki Bustamante, Jim
Clinton, Chris Gangemi, Klemens Gasser, Nick Hamblet, Bob Leonti, Hugh
McGuinness, Kevin Nolan, Karen & Barbara Rubinstein (K&BRu), Eileen
Schwinn, John Todaro, Marguerite Wolffsohn,
