HIGHLIGHTS

American Golden Plover, Marbled Godwit, Upland Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper,
Caspian Tern

In Riverhead, both AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS have been
seen regularly in the sod fields west of Rt 104 from Northville Turnpike to Sound
Ave. AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER reports are as follows: 5 just south of Sound Ave along
RT 105 on Sep 2 (DK); a total of 8 were seen later in the day on Sep 2 (BA); 13 were
found on Sep 3 (JT); 21 were found on Sep 4 (R&BSt); 17 south of Sound Ave along Rt
105 on Sep 6 (PG). BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS have been recorded as follows: 9 on Sep
2 (DK), of which 3 were along Rt 105 south of Sound Ave and 6 were south of
Northville Turnpike and west of Rt 105; 7 on Sep 3 (PD et al.), of which 6 were
south of Northville Turnpike; 3 remained south of Northville Turnpike on Sep 7 (BA).
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen on Sep 2 (JG), as was a WESTERN SANDPIPER (BA). A rumor
of a Sandhill Crane in the area is intriguing and I would love to hear details for
this possible sighting.

A TURKEY VULTURE was along Rt 51 in Eastport on Sep 2 (JG).

At Pike's Beach in Westhampton Dunes there was a CASPIAN TERN on Sep 2 (DK) and at
least 50 ROYAL TERNS on Sep 6 (PG). At Cupsogue, a MARBLED GODWIT was seen again on
Sep 2 (JG).

At Shinnecock an adult PEREGRINE FALCON was atop the Osprey nest east of the bridge
on Sep 2 (JG). On Sep 4 there were 20 ROYAL TERNS and 21 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES
along Dune Road (AJL).

In North Sea, Southampton, a CLAPPER RAIL and three all-black chicks were spotted on
Sep 3 (W&GBk). This species is quite uncommon in the Peconic Bay estuary.

There is still shoreline at Oyster Pond in Montauk and there were 2 WESTERN
SANDPIPERS on Sep 3 (VB). On Sep 4 3 WHITE-RUMPED & 1 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, and a
LITTLE BLUE HERON were found there (AB).

A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen off Mashomack on Sep 1 (TD).

Ten PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were in Aquebogue on Sep 5 (AB). Four COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were
seen over New Suffolk on Sep 5 (J&EP). Two WHIMBREL were at Cedar Beach Park in
Southold on Sep 3 (PD et al.).

An escaped HARRIS' HAWK has been seen in South Setauket since Sep 3.

The September Goose hunting season opened on the first and runs through the 25th.
Only Canada Goose may be taken during this season, which is designed to reduce the
population of geese that nest locally.

This week I received reports from Bob Adamo, Andy Baldelli, Willy & Gerry Becker
(W&GBk), Vicki Bustamante, Tom Damiani, Pete Dorosh, Paul Gillen, John Gluth, Dave
Klauber, Anthony J Lauro, Christine Montalbano, Joe & Eleanor Polashock, Rex &
Birgit Stanford (R&BSt), and John Turner.

Good Birding to All!
