This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for October 8, 2006,

In Sandoval County:
MW again saw a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER at his home in Cochiti Lake
Village on October 8.

In Santa Fe County:
LMo and JoO on October 7 found a large flock of AMERICAN PIPITS on White
Lakes Road near the playas south of Santa Fe.

In San Miguel County:
BW advises that the Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas Lake is now closed to
birding. There is a new lessee there, and all attempts at negotiations have
failed.

In Colfax County:
DC at Sugarite State Park near Raton on October 7 had two OSPREYS and an
adult BALD EAGLE at Maloya Lake, a pair of ACORN WOODPECKERS still near the Lake
Alice Dam, and 13 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES in the oak areas.
DC had four BLUE JAYS at once at his feeder in Maxwell on October 3. At
least 25 CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS were at SPRINGER Lake on October 3.
On September 30 he had about 120 PINYON JAYS east of Cimarron near the
junction of NM 204 with US 64. There were eight LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS in the same
area with three BLUE JAYS at mile marker 4 on 204.
DC at Stubblefield Lake near the refuge on September 29 had 16 WHITE
PELICANS.
On September 23 DC was surprised to see 20 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Eagle
Nest (at 8400 feet!).

In Union County:
CR, BN, and MH on September 30 at Clayton Lake SP saw two EASTERN PHOEBES
and a FIELD SPARROW. In Clayton there were three WHITE-WINGED DOVES.
On the road to Wetherly Lake there were CHESTNUT-COLLARED AND MCCOWN'S
LONGSPURS with two WESTERN GREBES on the lake.

In Bernalillo County:
DP on October 1 saw ten RED CROSSBILLS at the 10 K Trailhead in the Sandia
Mts. east of Albuquerque. On October 2 on the Piedra Lisa Trail on the west
side of the mts. there was a CASSIN'S VIREO, a male TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, a
flock of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and up to up to four WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS.

In Valencia County:
DBa on September 22 saw four LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS along the Peralta Drainage
Ditch near Belen. Two more were seen again on September 23.

In DeBaca County:
In a field southeast of Fort Sumner on October 7 JP saw a late 12 SWAINSON'S
HAWKS.
In the town on October 7 LMo and JoO saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.
JO on September 27 had a young male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at the northeast
corner of Yeso on US 60. On September 29 it was seen by JP, WW, and LL.
At Sumner Lake on October 7 JP saw a single FRANKLIN'S GULL.

In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose on September 30 JP and WW saw a
male NORTHERN PARULA. MB and NP on October 1 saw the Parula, the LONG-EARED
OWL, and a BROWN THRASHER. DH on October 6 saw a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, the thrasher, an EASTERN PHOEBE, and a BARN OWL.
JP on October 7 found the Parula, Black-throated Blue, thrasher, a
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, an OVENBIRD, one female TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, a male
YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and a fly over SPRAGUE'S PIPIT.
Most
were also seen by LMo and JoO.

In Chaves County:
DBa reported an AMERICAN BITTERN on Bitter Lake Refuge on September 30. JH
on October5 reported that the immature REDDISH EGRET is still present, about
1/4 mile south of the Hunter's Oxbow parking area. SANDHILL CRANES began
arriving in late September.

In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio DH on September 24 saw four
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on the refuge, and said up to 20 were reported on the log.
He also found two male VERMILION FLYCATCHERS.
At Water Canyon in the Magdalena Mts. west of Socorro on September 23 CL and
CBr found a CASSIN'S VIREO and TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. The old campground is
gone and the new one is nearing completion, with the road up to the Langmuir
Lab is open only on weekends.
On the NMTU campus in Socorro DBa found many JUNIPER TITMICE at Turtle Bay
Park and on the golf course October 1.

In Sierra County:
At South Monticello Point on Elephant Butte Lake there were 175 WHITE
PELICANS and close to 500 WESTERN and CLARK'S GREBES.

In Grant County:
PT and TM on September 27 in the Pinos Altos Mts. in the Signal Peak area
heard a SPOTTED OWL and PYGMY OWL.
EW and MF along the Gila Rio near Cliff say SANDHILL CRANES were returning
by September 20.
DG on September 28-29 made another foray into the Big Burro Mts. near Silver
City and found a GOSHAWK, RED CROSSBILLS, and a few YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS on
top with two fledglings. The road up is still pretty rough after the rains.

In Hidalgo County:
In Clanton Canyon on September 30 and October 1 CL found about three ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRDS at the feeders that have been placed there. Also there was two
male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS, PYGMY, ELF, and WHISKERED SCREECH OWLS,
WHIP-POOR-WILLS and POORWILLS with a BELTED KINGFISHER at a small dam and a few
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS.
CL in the Animas Valley on September 30 saw a BELTED KINGFISHER south of the
Gray Ranch headquarters.
At the playas west of Lordsburg at the Animas exit of I-10 CL on October 1
he saw 85 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.

In Luna County:
CL on September 30 had a BLUE-HEADED VIREO in Pecan Park in Deming.
At the Katfish Kove near the Grant Co. line LM had a SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, a
GREEN HERON, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on September 20.
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.

In Doņa Ana County:
JZ and MS report that most of their hummingbirds have left their home near
Radium Springs. They had up to two ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS on October 2 to 4.
Two MERLINS flew over and a LUCY'S WARBLER was seen on October 1, and a female
WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER on October 3 and 4.
CL at the Sunland Park racetrack near Santa Teresa on September 29 saw six
WHITE-FACED IBIS, two SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, a MARBLED GODWIT, and two
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS with other shorebirds.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.

In Eddy County:
WW at Rattlesnake Springs on October 2 saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and
singing CASSIN'S SPARROWS.
At the springs near Whites City SW on September 10 saw again the
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flying along the stream. On September 19 JBu again saw the hawK,
which he identified as the elegans subspecies. MB and NP missed it on October
1, but DBa saw it on September 26. WW did not find it October 1.
At Brantley Lake JS on September 24 saw a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and an OSPREY.
SW forwarded a report that EP had a female BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD at his
Carlsbad feeder on September 28.

Field Trips:

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On October 12 they go to the Alameda Open Space with Lannois Neely, on
October 19 to the Shining River Bosque Open Space with Sylvia Fine, and on
October 26 for a hike on the Embudito Trail with Nancy Phillips.

On Saturday, October 21 Southwestern Audubon will bird in the Black Range to
Lower Gallinas Campground over to Emory Pass.

On Saturday, October 28, Central Audubon will bird at the Bosque del Apache
Refuge. Contact is Bob Merkel at 838-2296.

Also on October 28 Mesilla Valley Audubon will go to the Rio Bosque Park in
El Paso. Call Walt Whitford at 521-1358.

The Festival of Cranes at Socorro this year will be November 14-19. Central
Audubon has put out a call for volunteers to help. Contact Jeff Myers at
998-1502.
