This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 9th, 2005.
On September 5th, a DICKCISSEL was seen with a large flock of HOUSE SPARROWS at the
Concord Community Gardens on Birch Street, located off of Clinton Street. Other
birds seen at this location later in the week included a MOURNING WARBLER, a
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 50 BOBOLINKS.
On September 7th, a PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from Jenness Beach in Rye, and 2 STILT
SANDPIPERS were seen in Meadow Pond in Hampton. On the 4th, 80 KILLDEER were seen at
the fields on Route 155A (near Rte 4) in Durham, and on the 7th, a WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER was seen at New Hampshire Audubon's Little River Sanctuary in North
Hampton.
On September 7th, in Concord, a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and a AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were
seen in the sod fields next to Horseshoe Pond, and 49 WOOD DUCKS were seen in
Horseshoe Pond.
At the Rochester Waste Water Treatment Plant a WESTERN SANDPIPER was seen on
September 2nd, and 8 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen on the 7th. The treatment plant is
gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please
check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do
not have to ask birders to leave. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the
plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
On September 3rd, a CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen in Hancock, and a PHILADELPHIA
VIREO, a MOURNING WARBLER, a WILSON'S WARBLER, and a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER were
reported from Sandwich. On September 2nd, a CAPE MAY WARBLER was seen in Glen.
On September 6th, a hiker in the White Mountains reported a SPRUCE GROUSE and a
BICKNELL'S THRUSH near the summit of Mt. Isolation, and 11 BOREAL CHICKADEES were
tallied along the trail. On the 7th, 2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, 2 GRAY JAYS, 2
BICKNELL'S THRUSHES, and several BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen on the first mile of
the Caps Ridge Trail in Jefferson Notch.
On September 4th, at the Trout Pond conservation area in Freedom were seen, a
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, an EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, 3 LEAST FLYCATCHERS, and many EVENING
GROSBEAKS.
On September 5th, an AMERICAN PIPIT and a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER were seen at
Surry Mountain Lake in Surry, 3 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, a GREAT
CRESTED FLYCATCHER, and CAROLINA WREN were seen in Penacook, 3 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, a
MOURNING WARBLER, and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO were seen in Hollis, and a WILSON'S
WARBLER, and a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER were reported from Lee.
New Hampshire Audubon and The Vermont Institute of Natural Science are co-sponsoring
a VT/NH Birders Conference at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, Vermont on October
