WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Tuesday October 10, 2006
A possible PACIFIC/ARCTIC LOON was studied on Friday in the northern areaof
the Quabbin Reservoir, but has not been reported since then.
Other birds seen at the north end of Quabbin were 16 COMMON LOONS, a
RED-NECKED GREBE, a HORNED GREBE, 9 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 26 GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
31 COMMON MERGANSERS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 15 DUNLIN, a
LEAST SANDPIPER, 165 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 7 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, and 2
WINTER WRENS.
At the south end of Quabbin in the park, there were 3 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, a
BONAPARTE’S GULL, an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, a BROWN
THRASHER, 10 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.
Observed in the west meadows of Northampton were a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a MERLIN,
a PEREGRINE FALCON, a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, 50 AMERICAN PIPITS, a
NORTHERN PARULA, a WILSON’S WARBLER, 25 PALM WARBLERS, 60 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS, 8 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 2 VESPER SPARROWS, and a DICKCISSEL.
In Turners Falls there were 8 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 14 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a
NORTHERN SHOVELER, 3 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 2 GREATER SCAUP, and a PIED-BILLED GREBE.
Found in Agawam were 2 NASHVILLE WARBLERS, a MAGNOLIA WARBLER, a TENNESSEE
WARBLER, 2 NORTHERN PARULAS, a CAPE MAY WARBLER, 10 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, 45
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 15 PALM WARBLERS, and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen in the east meadows of Northampton, 8 BRANT
and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK were reported in Barre Falls, 15 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS in
Hardwick, and a TENNESSEE and 60 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, a CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW, 7 AMERICAN PIPITS, and 14 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS in Northfield.
Reported in Pittsfield were 3 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 6 HOODED MERGANSERS, andan
AMERICAN COOT, while 30 AMERICAN PIPITS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 3 BLACK VULTURES,
and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR were seen in Granville.
This week’s hawk count at Barre Falls was 99 TURKEY VULTURES, 15 OSPREYS, 3
BALD EAGLES, 63 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 25 COOPER’S HAWKS, 7 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS,
24 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 5 MERLINS, and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
Counted in Granville were 20 TURKEY VULTURES, 11 OSPREYS, 8 BALD EAGLES, 7
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 125 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 28 COOPER’S HAWKS, 6 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, 69 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 5 MERLINS, and 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS.
The weekly tally over Russell was 20 TURKEY VULTURES, 24 OSPREYS, 4 BALD
EAGLES, 12 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 90 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 3 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 22
AMERICAN KESTRELS, 3 MERLINS, and 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS.
