In Sandoval County:
MW again saw a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER at his home in Cochiti Lake
Village on October 8.

In Santa Fe County:
JB on October 9 in Santa Fe had an immature NORTHERN PARULA in the Arroyo de
los Chamisos near the intersection of Zia Road and the Old Pecos Trail.
LMo and JoO on October 7 found a large flock of AMERICAN PIPITS on White
Lakes Road near the playas south of Santa Fe.

In San Miguel County:
BW advises that the Clabber Hill Ranch near Conchas Lake is now closed to
birding. There is a new lessee there, and all attempts at negotiation have
failed.

In Colfax County:
DC at Sugarite State Park near Raton on October 7 had two OSPREYS and an
adult BALD EAGLE at Maloya Lake, a pair of ACORN WOODPECKERS still near the Lake
Alice Dam, and 13 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES in the oak areas.
On September 30 he had about 120 PINYON JAYS east of Cimarron near the
junction of NM 204 with US 64. There were eight LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS in the same
area with three BLUE JAYS at mile marker 4 on 204.

In Union County:
CR, BN, and MH on September 30 at Clayton Lake SP saw two EASTERN PHOEBES
and a FIELD SPARROW.
On the road to Wetherly Lake there were CHESTNUT-COLLARED AND MCCOWN'S
LONGSPURS.

In Bernalillo County:
DP on October 1 saw ten RED CROSSBILLS at the 10 K Trailhead in the Sandia
Mts. east of Albuquerque. On October 2 on the Piedra Lisa Trail on the west
side of the mts. there was a flock of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and up to up to
four WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS.

In DeBaca County:
JB at the playa west of Taiban saw a PRAIRIE FALCON WITH A FERRUGINOUS HAWK
north of Fort Sumner.
In Fort Sumner on October 7 LMo and JoO saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.

In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose DH on October 6 saw a male
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, a BROWN THRASHER, an EASTERN PHOEBE, and a BARN OWL.
JP on October 7 found the PARULA WARBLER, Black-throated Blue, thrasher, a
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, an OVENBIRD, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. JB on
October 8 found only a pair of YELLOW-SHAFTED FLIKERS, a CATBIRD, an immature
female TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, a female AMERICAN REDSTART, and two CLAY-COLORED
SPARROWS.
JB on October 8 had a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER along NM 267.

In Chaves County:
DBa reported an AMERICAN BITTERN on Bitter Lake Refuge on September 30. JH
on October5 reported that the immature REDDISH EGRET is still present, about
1/4 mile south of the Hunter's Oxbow parking area. SANDHILL CRANES began
arriving in late September. JH found the egret on Unit 9 on October 11-12.
MB and NP on October 8 saw the egret and bittern with an immature male
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, MERLIN, and EASTERN PHOEBE at the headquarters.

In Socorro County:
On the NMTU campus in Socorro DBa found many JUNIPER TITMICE at Turtle Bay
Park and on the golf course October 1.
JS at Turtle Bay on October 6 saw a titmouse and a CASSIN'S VIREO.
At Water Canyon in the Magdalena Mts. west of Socorro CL reports that the
old campground is gone and the new one is nearing completion, with the road up
to the Langmuir Lab open only on weekends.

In Sierra County:
At South Monticello Point on Elephant Butte Lake there were 175 WHITE
PELICANS and close to 500 WESTERN and CLARK'S GREBES. JO and LL on October 6 saw a
SANDERLING at Lion's Point. It was still present October 8 with a
BONAPARTE'S GULL.
On October 6 there was a VERMILION FLYCATCHER at Percha Dam State Park and a
late ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER at Paseo del Rio Park below Elephant Butte Dam
on October 8.

In Grant County:
PT and TM on September 27 in the Pinos Altos Mts. in the Signal Peak area
heard a SPOTTED OWL and PYGMY OWL.
DG on October 5-6 made still another foray into the Big Burro Mts. near
Silver City and found many RED-SHAFTED FLICKERS, a male and female OLIVE WARBLER,
two adult GOLDEN EAGLES, ab adult female MERLIN, a few TURKEY VULTURES, a
PLUMBEOUS VIREO, fewer RED CROSSBILLS, and three pairs of YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS on
top with two juveniles. The road up is still pretty rough after the rains.
Also up to 25 COATIMUNDIS with young on Jack's Peak.

In Hidalgo County:
In Clanton Canyon on October 7 and 9 CL and CBr saw a male ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD at the feeders that have been placed there. Also there was a PYGMY OWL.
At the playas west of Lordsburg at the Animas exit of I-10 they saw 60
AVOCETS and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.

In Luna County:
CL and CBr on October 7 at the Mountain View Cemetery in Deming saw a LUCY'S
and a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER.
The waste treatment ponds in Deming have been closed for construction and
birding till further notice.

In Doña Ana County:
DG at his home in northeast Las Cruces on October 8 saw a SAGE THRASHER.
Present has been a SCOTT'S ORIOLE since October 11 with an immature male ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD on October 8 to 11.
JZ and MS report that most of their hummingbirds have left their home near
Radium Springs. They had up to two ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS on October 2 to 4. a
LUCY'S WARBLER was seen on October 1 and a female WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER
October 3 and 4.
CL at the Sunland Park racetrack near Santa Teresa on September 29 saw six
WHITE-FACED IBIS and a MARBLED GODWIT.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.

In Eddy County:
WW at Rattlesnake Springs on October 2 saw a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER. At the
Whites City sewage ponds on October 7 SW and TH found a SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER and a COLLARED DOVE.
At the springs near Whites City DBa saw the RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on September
26. There have been no later reports. MB and NP on 8 saw a COMMON BLACK
HAWK and a CASSIN'S VIREO there.
At Avalon Lake near Carlsbad on October 7 SW and TH saw an immature
BROAD-WINGED HAWK.
SW at Queen in the Guadalupe Mts. on October 9 saw 12 late WHITE-WINGED
DOVES and CASSIN'S KINGBIRDS.
SRW had an eastern subspecies of SUMMER TANAGER in their Carlsbad yard on
October 8.

Field Trips:

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On October 19 to the Shining River Bosque Open Space with Sylvia Fine,
and on October 26 for a hike on the Embudito Trail with Nancy Phillips.

On Saturday, October 21 Southwestern Audubon will bird in the Black Range to
Lower Gallinas Campground over to Emory Pass.

On Saturday, October 28, Central Audubon will bird at the Bosque del Apache
Refuge. Contact is Bob Merkel at 838-2296.

Also on October 28 Mesilla Valley Audubon will go to the Rio Bosque Park in
El Paso. Call Walt Whitford at 521-1358.

The Festival of Cranes at Socorro this year will be November 14-19. Central
Audubon has put out a call for volunteers to help. Contact Jeff Myers at
