Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for October 12,
2006. This report covers the period from October 6th to October 12th and
will be updated again on October 19th.

A VIRGINIA'S WARBLER was discovered on the 8th at Walkers Farm in
Barrington. This first state record was seen that afternoon but a diligent search
the
next day did not relocate the bird. Other sightings at Walkers Farm
included: 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, 1 YELLOW WARBLER, 2
DICKCISSEL, 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, 2 INDIGO BUNTING and 1
BLUE-HEADED VIREO.

At Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly, 1 CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, 1 BROWN
THRASHER and 1 "IPSWICH" SAVANNAH SPARROW on the 11th, and on the 12th, 4
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and 5 PALM WARBLER were seen there.

In the Matunuck area of South Kingstown, 1 SANDHILL CRANE was seen with
Canada Geese in the plowed fields to the north of Carpenter's Beach on the 6th.
A SNOW GOOSE was seen here on the 12th.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found on St.Mary's Pond in Portsmouth on
the 10th.

On the 11th at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's Environmental Education
Center in Bristol, 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK was found.

Along the Narrow River in Narraganset on the 9th, 1 CATTLE EGRET was
reported.

Increasingly hard to find, a RUFFED GROUSE was reported from Buck Hill
Management Area in Burrillville on the 7th.

At Napatree Point in Westerly, 1 SURF SCOTER, 38 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1
WESTERN SANDPIPER, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 10 DUNLIN, and 3 AMERICAN PIPIT
on the 7th. On the 12th, 1 AMERICAN PIPIT and a PEREGRINE FALCON were
reported.

Two AMERICAN PIPIT were seen at Camp Cronin in Narraganset on the 11th.

A VESPER SPARROW and 1 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW were found on the east
side of Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on the 7th.
