This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, September 9 at 11 a.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to
report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting
the transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara
is (805) 964-8240.

Laguna Creek, just across the railroad tracks from the new Chase Palm Park,
has had as many as three LUCY'S WARBLERS this week, foraging in willows and
weedy vegetation. At least one of those was still present yesterday, as well
as a VIRGINIA'S WARBLER. Walk east along the railroad track for about 100
yards from Garden Street and look in the fennel and anise.

At Carpinteria Creek, between 6th and 8th streets, a male HERMIT WARBLER and
a fall plumage BLACKPOLL WARBLER were seen on the 5th. On the 4th, a LUCY'S
WARBLER was in the fennel just northeast of the signed overlook onto the
seal haul-out below the Carpinteria Bluffs. Park at the south end of
Bailard, between Carpinteria Avenue and the bluffs, walk south to the bluff
and then east almost to the Venoco pier.

Two WOOD DUCKS were at the Bird Refuge on the 5th.

Two YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were at the Goleta Sewage Plant on the 7th.

A PEREGRINE FALCON was at Devereux Slough on the 7th.

This week, the following birds were seen from the UCSB overlook to Goleta
Slough, which is just opposite the Environmental Health and Safety building
on campus: A LUCY'S WARBLER, foraging in the fennel, two VIRGINIA RAILS, 17
AMERICAN AVOCETS, 12 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER.

At Refugio State Beach, a CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE was present on Monday
the 5th, and a HERMIT WARBLER was at El Capitan State Beach on the same day.

Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were reported from the Santa Maria Sewage Plant on
Tuesday the 6th.

In Lompoc, an EASTERN KINGBIRD was reported from Ocean Park, just off the
parking lot, on Sunday the 4th. Also in Lompoc, in Miguelito Park, a
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE was present the same day.

At Waller Park in Santa Maria, the CACKLING GOOSE and the ROSS'S GOOSE were
still in the front pond on August 30th. [At River Oaks Park in Santa Maria,
the continuing shorebirds include 9 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS and 2 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS.]

That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
