Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of
Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species;
or 3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species
with three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa
(UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species
with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL,
CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species
with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation
provided. Occasionally, these asterisks may only apply to certain regularly
occuring species at certain times of the year. Species in the ACCIDENTAL and
CASUAL categories are listed in order of accepted occurance in the state,
with the rarest species at the top. Species in the ACCIDENTAL category will
also have the accepted or potential state record number next to the species
name.



-Weekly Summary for Sunday, October 15th, 2006:
Fourty-nine species are mentioned in the report this week. Two Accidental
species were found, a SPRAGUE'S PIPIT in Clay County and a LITTLE GULL in
Appanoose County. Three Casual species were also found, two (and later one)
BRANTS in Clay County, a FERRUGINOUS HAWK in Sioux County, and a RED
PHALAROPE in Appanoose County. A RED-THROATED LOON was found in Linn County
early in the week and was observed periodically throughout the week. A few
SABINE'S GULLS were also around yet this week. A strong arctic cold front
moved through the state this week, and brought with it several more
colder-weather birds, including several SURF SCOTERS, record early BLACK
SCOTER, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, PRAIRIE FALCON, SPOTTED TOWHEE,
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, a record early COMMON REDPOLL, and
PINE SISKINS. A few species are still lingering around the state, such as a
HUDSONIAN GODWIT, a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, a CLIFF SWALLOW, and a couple
of DICKCISSELS.



-Here is the Iowa Rare Bird Alert from Monday, October 9th to Sunday,
October 15th, 2006:

SOUTHWEST:
POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY: A single BROAD-WINGED HAWK and 14 SWAINSON'S HAWKS
(including 1 rufous-morph) were the highlights on the Hitchcock Hawkwatch on
the 9th.
Singles of GOLDEN EAGLE and PRAIRIE FALCON were both firsts for the season
at Hitchcock on the 12th.
Two GOLDEN EAGLES and a season first NORTHERN GOSHAWK were highlights at
Hitchcock on the 13th.



WEST CENTRAL:
WOODBURY COUNTY: Single BLUE-HEADED VIREO and NASHVILLE WARBLERS were found
at Bacon Creek Park in Sioux City on the 9th.
Some highlights from the Owego Wetlands area and Loess Hills areas of
Woodbury County on the 14th included a SPOTTED TOWHEE, more than 20 LE
CONTE'S SPARROWS, and a late HUDSONIAN GODWIT at Port Neal.

CALHOUN COUNTY: At South Twin Lake on the 10th was an EARED GREBE, a MERLIN,
22 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, a WINTER WREN, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.



NORTHWEST:
CLAY COUNTY: Two BRANTS of the western race (Black Brant) were discovered at
Dickens Pit on the 10th. Located just east of the town of Dickens on Hwy 18,
turn south on 290th Ave and go about a quarter mile to the parking area on
the east side of the road. The birds were hanging around the island on the
big main pool to the north. At least one BRANT continued to be reliable
through the 14th.
A SPRAGUE'S PIPIT was discovered at a newly restored prairie area near a
wetland at the Larry Wilson WPA on the 14th. The bird was flushed three
times during the morning, displaying the distinct stair-climb flight and
diving back to the ground and calling the entire time. The bird was kicked
up later in the day as well. Several SMITH'S LONGSPURS were found across a
couple locations as well.

POCAHONTAS COUNTY: At Lizard Lake on the 10th were 24 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS, a late CLIFF SWALLOW, 2 WINTER WRENS, and a single MARSH
WREN.

SIOUX COUNTY: A light morph juvenile FERRUGINOUS HAWK was observed along
highway 60 on the 11th. The bird was located between mile markers 24 and 25
and was actively hunting.



NORTH CENTRAL:
KOSSUTH COUNTY: Observed on the only reasonable shorebird habitat at Union
Slough N.W.R. on the 10th were BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, LEAST SANDPIPER, and a MERLIN. This was located north
of A42, near the headquarters.
Two locations near Union Slough N.W.R held SMITH'S LONGSPURS on the 15th,
totaling 24 birds. The water north of the refuge headquarters is almost
gone, but still holds some shorebirds: a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 40 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS, about 12 LEAST SANDPIPERS, and 30 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were
also present.

HANCOCK COUNTY: WINTER WRENS were found at Pilot Knob State Park on the
10th. At Meredith Marsh were NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED and WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY: At the Water Treatment Ponds in Forest City on the 10th
were LESSER SCAUP, HORNED GREBE, and AMERICAN PIPITS.

CERRO GORDO COUNTY: Five PINE SISKINS and a record early (tie) COMMON
REDPOLL were observed at a residence in Ventura on the 15th.



EAST CENTRAL:
LINN COUNTY: A juvenile RED-THROATED LOON was found at Pleasant Creek State
Recreational Area on the 11th. The bird was observed moving in the area of
the beach and up the large cove. The LOON was seen periodically through the
14th.
Six BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS (5 immatures and 1 adult) and 2 HORNED GREBES
were found at Cedar Lake in Cedar Rapids on the 13th.
A female/immature SURF SCOTER was found at Pleasant Creek S.R.A. on the
14th, as was the RED-THROATED LOON.



SOUTHEAST:
LEE COUNTY: Two AMERICAN AVOCETS were observed at Green Bay Bottoms, near
Wever, on the 15th.



SOUTH CENTRAL:
MARION COUNTY: A juvenile SABINE'S GULL was located off Red Rock Dam on the
11th.

APPANOOSE COUNTY: An adult LITTLE GULL was observed at Lake Rathbun on the
11th. The bird was on the south side of the lake, observed from Image Place
in Island View Park.
A juvenile RED PHALAROPE was found north of the Lake Rathbun Dam on the
14th. The bird was observed from the dedication area pullout on the south
side of the lake. Four COMMON LOONS and 9 HORNED GREBES were also noted.



CENTRAL:
POLK COUNTY: Highlights from Saylorville Reservoir on the 9th included an
AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, 17 REDHEADS, 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a LESSER SCAUP, 4
HORNED GREBES, a juvenile SABINE'S GULL off Cherry Glen, and 19 FORSTER'S
TERNS.
At Saylorville Reservoir on the 11th were 5 AMERICAN AVOCETS (at Oak Grove)
and 2 SURF SCOTERS at Big Creek. A MERLIN and a juvenile SABINE'S GULL were
also noted.
At Saylorville Reservoir on the 12th were 3 SURF SCOTERS and a record early
(tie) BLACK SCOTER. Other highlights included 110 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 8
HORNED GREBES, a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, an AMERICAN AVOCET, and 3 SANDERLINGS.
Two BLACK SCOTERS were present at Big Creek on the 13th.
Highlights from Saylorville Reservoir on the 15th included 7 female/immature
SURF SCOTERS, 7 COMMON LOONS, a molting adult SABINE'S GULL, and a LAPLAND
LONGSPUR. Two EARED GREBES were at Big Creek Lake as well.

STORY COUNTY: A female RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD is still lingering around
Ames, as reported on the 14th.

DALLAS COUNTY: Sparrows were the highlight at Brenton Arboretum on the 14th,
with AMERICAN TREE, LE CONTE'S, and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED being the
highlights. Two DICKCISSELS were also lingering.
