This Bird Alert was recorded on Thursday, October 12 at 10:45am.

A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen at Langdon Reservoir on the afternoon of
October 9. The bird was seen by Jerry Pilny and Alan Fishkin. It was in
amongst several BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER. Langdon
Reservoir is just east of Hwy 797 on Hwy 22X. The north end can be reached
by following the first Range Road east of Langdon to its terminus south of
Hwy 560.

A large flock of WESTERN GREBES was observed on Clear Lake east of Stavely
on October 9. Terry Korolyk estimated there were probably over 500 birds
there that day. Other birds observed there by Terry included a juvenile
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, a juvenile FRANKLIN'S GULL, a very young juvenile
RED-NECKED GREBE, 2 immature SURF SCOTERS, 10 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, a lone AMERICAN AVOCET, 18 KILLDEER, a PRAIRIE FALCON,
a dark-morph RED-TAILED HAWK and a 1st year GOLDEN EAGLE. He saw 2 NORTHERN
SHRIKES along Twp. Rd. 140 while driving to Pine Coulee Reservoir west of
Hwy 2. On the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 11, Terry saw 4 immature SURF
SCOTERS off the Yacht Club at Glenmore Reservoir in Calgary. He also
reported then a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT on the slope beLOW Parking Lot 'C' at
the reservoir. Other recent late migrant songbird reports included a
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER by Pat Mitchell in her yard
in Valley Ridge on Oct. 9.

A flock of 12 HOODED MERGANSERS were seen west of Cochrane on Oct 9. The
birds were seen by T. McNeill on a pond on the Grand Valley Road just south
of the Simpson Ranch.

The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Monday, October 16.

BIRD STUDY GROUP

Bird Study Group meets the first Wednesday of the month, Room 211,
BioSciences Building, U of C except June through August when field trips
replace the meeting. On November 1, Al MacKeigan will be giving a
