This Bird Alert was recorded on Monday, Oct 16 at 11:30am.

A LONG-EARED OWL was seen in the Burnsmead area of east Fish Creek PP in
Calgary on the evening of October 13. The bird was seen by Anne Elliott.
She found the bird in shrubs approximately 12 metres south of the western
end of the large pedestrian bridge across the Bow River. Anne observed the
bird for an hour.

Two unusual and rare ducks were observed at Clear Lake 15 km east of Stavely
on October 15. Both birds were seen by Terry Korolyk. The bird seen off
Twp Rd 140 west of the campground was a male EURASIAN WIGEON moulting into
breeding plumage. The other bird seen along the NW shoreline off Twp Rd 142
was a MALLARD-AMERICAN WIGEON hybrid male. Interestingly, Terry saw a
different hybrid male AMERICAN WIGEON-MALLARD in almost the exact same
location on March 13, 2005. Other birds seen by Terry at the lake Oct 15
included a very young juvenile PIED-BILLED GREBE at the north end. Terry
reported the immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON seen here on Oct 9 was still
along the irrigation canal on the NE corner. He counted 260 WESTERN GREBES
on the main lake off the campground and saw 2 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, 2
FRANKLIN'S GULLS, and 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS. At Pine Coulee Reservoir by
Willow Creek PP on Oct 15, Terry Korolyk observed a PACIFIC LOON along the
east side of the Reservoir 2 kms south of Twp Rd 150. The bird was an adult
moulting into winter plumage. Nearby was a flock of 13 SURF SCOTERS. Off
the dam at the reservoir, Terry observed 8 SURF SCOTERS and 110 WESTERN
GREBES.

The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Thursday, October 19.
