This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species

CORRECTION FROM LAST TRANSCRIPT: On the 27th of September Sean McAllister
saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, not RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at Teal Point at Lake Earl,
Del Norte County.

1 Oct.
-----------
In DEL NORTE COUNTY, 4,800 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, a record number for
Northwestern California, were at Teal Point of Lake Earl. Also present were
35 CACKLING GEESE (non-Aleutian) and 1 light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (Alan
Barron).

At Mad River County Park a CHESTNUT-SIDED and MAGNOLIA WARBLER were present
on the main trail, accessed from the northwest corner of the parking lot. On
the gravel bar were 6 LESSER YELLOWLEGS (Daryl Coldren).

A BURROWING OWL was seen on the I Street levee along with a flyover PECTORAL
SANDPIPER and 55 flyover GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE. Twelve more GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen over the observers house in Bayside (Jude
Power).

2 Oct.

A PALM and BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER were in alders behind the Six Rivers
Supervisors Office in Eureka (Tom Leskiw).

At Shay Park in Arcata, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found near the dirt
parking lot (Jim Tietz); the bird was seen later in the day (Daryl Coldren).
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was found on the train tracks and 2 BLACK-THROATED
GRAY WARBLERS were also present in the park (Jim Tietz).

3 Oct.

Three PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen in the plowed field on Seidel Road in
the Arcata Bottoms. There were also 10 flyover GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE.
One SHORT-EARED OWL was seen south of the V-street Loop. A PALM WARBLER was
seen at the Elk River Wildlife Area in Eureka (Scott Carey).

A MAGNOLIA WARBLER was seen in the Cypress Grove on the North Spit. A PALM
WARBLER was seen near the Airport Willows (David Fix).

A BURROWING OWL was seen on Bear River Ridge (Sean McAllister).

4 Oct.

On the road to Fay Slough one CLAY-COLORED and another unidentified Spizella
sparrow were found (John Hunter).

At a private residence on Zehdner Avenue in Arcata were a WHITE-THROATED and
FOX SPARROW. A CHIPPING SPARROW was present there on the 2nd Oct. (Gary
Bloomfield).

5 Oct.

At the plowed field on Seidel Road, in the Arcata Bottoms, were 6 PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 2 unidentified GOLDEN-PLOVERS (Scott Carey).

A WOOD PEWEE, possibly fitting characteristics of an EASTERN, was found at
the Cypress Grove on the North Spit; it was mostly frequenting the
eucalyptus in the grove. Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were seen at Fay Slough.
Walk in 20 minutes to the pine trees and this was where the birds were
present (David Fix).

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER and YELLOW WARBLER were present at Cafe Mocha in
Arcata at the corner of 5th and J Streets. At Moxon Dairy was a CHIPPING
SPARROW and a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. At the plowed field on Seidel Road, in
the Arcata Bottoms, were 5 PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS
and 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (Jim Tietz).

Twenty-five GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 1 AMERICAN BITTERN were seen
east of the causeway at Big Lagoon iMatt Hinton).

6 Oct.

A HOODED MERGANSER, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and 1 OSPREY were present at
Tyee City on the Mad River (Jim Tietz).

The possible EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE was seen by some observers before it took
off and flew to the north out of sight. At the Coast Guard Station 1 SAY'S
PHOEBE was seen (Kerry Ross).

7 Oct.
------------
A SPOTTED TOWHEE was at the Orick Dump (Ken Burton).

8 Oct.
------------
In the Arcata Bottoms, 20 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS were at Pacific Union School
at intersection of Janes and Upper Bay Road (Christine Kyle).

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was the highlight of birding at the Arcata marsh; the
bird was found on the north side of the Log Pond.Other warblers present
there were 5 YELLOW WARBLERS and 3 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS. Three EURASIAN
WIDGEON were seen at the Allen Marsh. Two RED KNOTS were at the easternmost
island at Klopp Lake (Jim Tietz).

On Lanphere Road in the Arcata Bottoms 2 WILSON'S SNIPES were present on the
west side of the slough there (Jim Tietz).

An AMERICAN REDSTART was at the Orick Dump. A LAPLAND and CHESTNUT-C0LLARED
LONGSPUR were found at the mouth of Redwood Creek (Ken Irwin).

A PALM WARBLER was found on 8th Street in Arcata, southwest of the old
Yakima building. At the plowed field on Seidel Road 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS
were seen (Scott Carey). At Mad River County Park 2 HERMIT THRUSHES and 1
YELLOW WARBLER were seen (Scott Carey).

A SAY'S PHOEBE was found on the south side of the barn which is west of the
headquarters at Humbodlt Bay NWR. A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was seen from the
Dillon Road Bridge along the Salt River in the Ferndale Bottoms. A PALM
WARBLER was in the woodlot at the end of Camp Weott Road (David Fix).

A SPOTTED TOWHEE was at the Azalea State Reserve (Ken Burton).

Eight BARN SWALLOWS were seen on the east side of the V-street Loop. A
YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER was seen off of 8th street in Arcata (Scott Carey).

9 Oct.
------------
A female BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was found at the willow patch (Entrance
Patch) across from the Samoa boat Ramp on the North Spit. A WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW was at the Cypress Patch (David Fix).

Near the end of Cannibal Island Road in the Loleta Bottoms were 3 TROPICAL
KINGBIRDS (Mike Marsh).

A male and possible female BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen at Gearheart Marsh, at
the Arcata Marsh (Ken Burton).

10 Oct.
------------
A PALM WARBLER was found in the roadside willows near the north end of the
Allen Marsh. A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen along the trail ("Sparrow
Alley") below and north of Mount Trashmore (David Fix).

At Tyee City, along the Mad River, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS and a juvenile
RED-NECKED GREBE. At Seidel and Foster Road a leucistic BREWER'S BLACKBIRD
was found (Scott Carey).

A FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen on the easternmost island at Klopp Lake at 4 p.m.
(Mike Marsh).

11 Oct.
------------
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and FERRUGINOUS HAWK was seen in the vicinity of the
town of Rohnerville (Dick McDonald).

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was seen at the southwest corner of Allen Marsh
(Alexander Lamb).

A pelagic outing on a private boat 11-12 miles west of Humboldt Bay producec
50-60 BULLER'S SHEARWATERS, 3 PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS, 2 FLESH-FOOTED
SHEARWATERS, 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 1 SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATER, and 30-40
RHINOCEROS AUKLETS (Matt Wachs).

12 Oct.
------------
A BLACK-THROATED GRAY and PALM WARBLER, and WESTERN TANAGER were in the
willows behind the Six Rivers Supervisors Office in Eureka (Tom Leskiw).

A SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was seen circling over the Arcata Oxidation Ponds.
A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen at the corner of Bayshore and
Moxon Roads in the Arcata Bottoms (Kerry Ross).

The FRANKLIN'S GULL continued at the east island at Klopp Lake (Daryl
Coldren).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a BURROWING OWL was seen on the road to Lake Talawa. At
the mouth of Lake Talawa were a RED KNOT, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, and 1
PECTORAL SANDPIPER (Lucas Bruigi).

A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was at the Eureka Marsh (Tom Leskiw).

13 Oct.
------------
A NASHVILLE WARBLER was behind the Six Rivers Supervisors Office in Eureka
(Tom Leskiw).

At the Orick Dump 2 PALM WARBLERS were seen. At the Oxbow Patch were a
BLACKPOLL and eastern ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (Ken Irwin).

A RUFF was found in the northwest corner of the large pond at Eel River
Wildlife Area (Ocean Ranch Unit; Sean McAllister).

A PALM WARBLER was at the Allen Marsh (Daryl Coldren).

A lonely BARN SWALLOW was seen at the Moxon Dairy in the Arcata Bottoms
(Scott Carey).

14 Oct.

At Manila Dunes Recreation Area a PEREGRINE FALCON, ROCK WREN, and a
SAVANNAH SPARROW were the highlights (Mike Seever).

A PRAIRIE WARBLER was found in northwestern McKinleyville (Keith Slauson).
The bird can be relocated by taking the Airport Road exit and then going
under the overpass to the frontage road. Turn right and park at the dead
end. An observer had the bird by walking 700 meters where pavement turns to
gravel (Kerry Ross).

15 Oct.

At the Orick Dump the continuing PALM WARBLERS were joined by a
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. At the Oxbow Patch a PALM WARBLER was seen. At the
base of Bald Hills, north of Orick, were an Eastern ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO (Ken Irwin).
